Abstract:

A continuous method for synthesizing hydrocarbons from a methane source which comprises contacting methane with particles comprising an oxidative synthesizing agent under synthesis conditions wherein particles recirculate between two physically separate zones: a methane contact zone and an oxygen contact zone. Preferably, particles are maintained in each of the two zones as fluidized beds of solids. Particularly effective oxidative synthesizing agents are reducible oxides of metals selected from the group consisting of Mn, Sn, In, Ge, Pb, Sb, and Bi.

Abstract:

A method for the production of. alpha. ,. beta. -unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids by the liquid phase oxidation of the corresponding. alpha. ,. beta. -unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes, particularly acrolein and methacrolein, and the in situ decomposition of unsaturated intermediate peroxy (peroxide) compounds formed during oxidation, which comprises passing oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas through an inert solvent solution of the aldehyde at a suitable temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic or organic antimony salt. The solvent employed may also be mixed with water forming a heterogeneous solvent system.

Abstract:

A class of mixed oxide catalysts comprising Mn-containing oxides, alkali metals or compounds thereof, and at least one member of the group consisting of oxides of Si, oxides of alkaline earth metals, and mixed oxides of Si and at least one alkaline earth metal. In the more preferred embodiments, the third component serves as a carrier for the Mn and alkali metal components. The composition preferably comprises a major amount of the carrier material and minor amounts of the other components. The compositions are useful for hydrocarbon coversion, methane conversion, and oxidative dehydrogenation processes characterized by formation of coproduct water.

Abstract:

In an aqueous alkaline solution having a pH greater than 11. 9, thallous isobutyrate is oxidized by air in a temperature within a range from about 90. degree. C to about 250. degree. C to prepare a slurry of thallic oxide from which thallic oxide can be recovered. The alkaline isobutyrate solution can be treated with carbon dioxide under pressure to form a carbonate salt and isobutyric acid, which can be solvent extracted from the aqueous system. Such isobutyric acid can be employed in a 30 percent aqueous solution at 90. degree. -150. degree. C to dissolve thallic oxide and to prepare thallic triisobutyrate. This aqueous solution of thallic triisobutyrate can be employed for the oxidation of an organic compound susceptible to oxidation to desirable partially oxidized organic compounds, such as the oxidation of propylene to propylene oxide. The carbonate salt can be thermally decomposed to regenerate an alkaline metal hydroxide and carbon dioxide. The availability of this novel preparation of thallic oxide makes feasible the recycling of most components, so that the thallium ion is an intermediate useful for the oxidation of an organic compound indirectly using the oxygen of air through such cyclic processing of the thallium ion.

The oxide is reduced by the contact and coproduct water is formed. A reducible oxide of bismuth is regenerated by oxidizing the reduced composition with molecular oxygen. The oxide Bi. sub. 2 O. sub. 3 is a particularly effective solid synthesizing agent.
