Hydrogen sulfide formation is suppressed by a three-way conversion catalyst having an underlayer and a topcoat overlying the under layer. The under layer is prepared by dispersing a Group IIa metal oxide such as an oxide of magnesium, calcium, barium or strontium on a carrier such as a refractory metal oxide monolith. A topcoat overlying the undercoat is comprised of a three-way conversion catalyst material such as a platinum-group metal catalytic component, e. g. , platinum, palladium, rhodium or mixtures thereof.

Abstract:
A hydrocarbon adsorption unit for recovery of volatile hydrocarbons which emanate from several sources and which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere through the air cleaner of an automobile engine when the engine is shut-off. The unit is positioned in the air intake system such that all air flowing through the engine passes through the unit. The unit comprises a housing having an air inlet and an air outlet. The housing contains a substrate and a volatile hydrocarbon adsorber material coated on the surface of the substrate. The adsorber material may be silica gel, a molecular sieve and/or activated carbon. The material further contains a binder that will cause the material to adhere to the surface of the substrate.
A layered exhaust treatment catalyst comprising: (a) a carrier such as cordierite; (b) a first layer deposited on the carrier comprising a palladium metal component, a platinum metal component and an oxygen storage component such as ceria supported on a refractory metal oxide such as gamma-alumina; and (c) a second layer deposited on the first layer comprising a rhodium metal component, a platinum metal component and an oxygen storage component such as ceria supported on a refractory metal oxide such as gamma-alumina. Preferably, the catalyst also includes a bottom layer interposed between the carrier and the first layer. The bottom layer comprises an oxygen storage component such as ceria supported on a refractory metal oxide such as gamma-alumina. The amount of the oxygen storage component of the catalyst may be “tuned”, i. e. , adjusted, to meet the needs of a vehicle's on-board diagnostic (“OBD”) catalyst efficiency monitoring system, without adversely affecting the performance of the catalyst.
The present invention relates to a layered catalyst composite of the type generally referred to as a three-way conversion catalyst having the capability of simultaneously catalyzing the oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. The structure of the layered catalyst composite of the present invention is designed wherein there are three layers in conjunction with a carrier: a first layer deposited on the carrier and comprising a high surface area refractory metal oxide; a second layer deposited on the first layer and comprising palladium and/or platinum deposited on a high surface area refractory metal oxide, and having substantially no oxygen storage components; and a third layer deposited on the second layer and comprising platinum and/or rhodium as well as an oxygen storage component, deposited on a high surface area refractory metal oxide.
