Abstract:

A laser employing a dispenser cathode is provided with a tubular enclosure surrounding that cathode. The tubular enclosure serves as a support for the bore and the optical chamber on either side of the dispenser cathode and is insulated from ambient temperature conditions by a ballast reservoir housed in a jacket encircling the tubular enclosure. The jacket has peripheral sidewalls spaced apart from the tubular enclosure. Lateral end walls connect the opposite extremities of the peripheral sidewalls in a sealing engagement to the exterior of the tubular enclosure. Communication between the interior of the jacket and the interior of the tubular support is afforded through an aperture formed in the tubular support at a location remote from the dispenser cathode. Leads for the dispenser cathode are disposed in a sealing engagement through the end walls of the jacket and enter the interior of the tubular support through the aperture formed therethrough. By retaining rather than dissipating from the tubular support the heat generated by the dispenser cathode, a predictable and circumferentially uniform amount of longitudinal, temperature-related dimensional changes are induced in the tubular support, preventing cathode housing bending of the support structure between the optical chamber and the bore.

Abstract:

An adjustable clamp assembly for use in an automated assembly tool. The clamp assembly includes a column portion and a clamp portion, the column portion being mounted to a support of a jig structure for longitudinal movement relative thereto. The jig supports are spaced apart to receive the components which are to be assembled, and the clamp portions are mounted on the ends of the column portions which protrude into the working envelope between the supports. The column portions are selectively movable relative to the supports so as to adjust the distances by which the clamp portions extend into the working envelope. A threaded shaft is rotatably mounted to the column portion and is rotated by an electric motor so that the shaft interacts with a threaded nut in the column to effect the longitudinal movement. The clamp portion on the end of the column portion has a fixed locating hook and a pneumatically actuated clamping hook which pivots from an open position to a closed position to grip the components to be assembled. The positioning of the clamp assemblies and the operation of the pneumatically actuated clamps is directed by the automated computerized control portion of the assembly machine.

Abstract:

The present invention discloses a novel machine that, by a dry process, will segregate granules of different specific gravities. The machine first segregates the granules as to size, regardless of their specific gravities and regardless of the multiplicity of the sizes (within limits set by the machine). In the next step the machine feeds individual granules side by side ranging progressively from fine to more coarse into a stream of air that ranges in carrying power from low to high in a sequence corresponding to the increasing sizes of the granules that fall through it. The carrying power of the air stream is regulated to convey granules having the same specific gravity to the same container, regardless of the sizes of the granules. Granules of different specific gravities will be deposited in different containers. Thus gold will be segregated from silver, and silver from copper etc.

Abstract:

The combination of a thermoplastic polymer and a thermosetting polymer, provides a pigment system for producing coated printing papers. The thermoplastic polymer and thermosetting polymer, suspended in well-known coating binders and carriers, is applied to the web substrate on a standard paper machine. The amount of thermoset, preferably at least about 25% by weight of the pigment solids, improves ink receptivity and allows adjustable control of finished paper gloss. The amount of thermoset added to the pigment system is limited, however, preferably below about 75% by weight of the pigment solids, so that the finished printing paper obtains a Gardner 75. degree. gloss of at least about 40, at calendering pressures of less than 500 PLI.
