Abstract:
An automatic fault detector momentarily interrupts a provision of operating power to a load having a minimal forward-bias voltage requirement to thereby provide a testing window and then applies a test voltage during this window that is less than the minimal forward-bias voltage requirement to the load and monitors for a power-to-ground fault. By one approach the aforementioned momentarily interruption of power is neither frequent enough nor long enough in duration to substantially impair the provision of power to the load. Accordingly, load performance is not noticeably diminished. One can then responsively prohibit subsequent provision of the operating power to the load. One can then continue to monitor for the power-to-ground fault while continuing to prohibit provision of operating power to the load. If and when the fault disappears, these teachings will then accommodate automatically resuming an ordinary provision of power to the load.
Method For Tuning Voice Playback Ratio To Optimize Call Quality

International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for tuning voice playback ratio (pbr) to optimize call quality in a packet voice communications system, while taking into account network conditions. The pbr is the ratio of resampling rate to the original sampling rate. The invention also optimizes jitter buffer length (jb) for call quality. Between bursts of speech, the preferred embodiment of the invention optimizes call quality by varying the initial jband the pbr to achieve the best R-factor (R). R is an estimate of customer satisfaction with the quality of a voice call in real time. During bursts of speech, the value of jbis fixed at the beginning of the BOS and the pbr is varied to achieve the best R. The method can be implemented during a burst of speech and between bursts of speech whenever the network conditions change.
High-Intensity-Discharge Lamp Of The Mercury-Metal Halide Type Which Efficiently Illuminates Objects With Excellent Color Appearance

Westinghouse Electric Corp. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
High-intensity-discharge lamp of the mercury-metal halide type efficiently illuminates objects with excellent color appearance. The arc tube filling comprises the usual inert, ionizable starting gas and mercury in predetermined amount as required to provide a predetermined operating voltage drop between the lamp electrodes. The metal halide filling substantially comprises a predetermined limited amount of thallous iodide, a predetermined limited amount of stannous iodide and a predetermined limited amount of calcium iodide. The stannous iodide is used in such amount that it serves primarily to enhance the emission of the calcium iodiode and the amount of stannous iodide is sufficiently limited to curtail the generation of the characteristic continuous tin emission. The calcium iodide is present in greater gram amount than the tin iodide so that the effects of the calcium iodide emission are predominant. The resulting discharge has its emission concentrated in three selected wavelength portions of the visible spectrum, namely, blue violet which is due primarily to the calcium iodide emission, green which is due to the thallium iodide emission, and red which is due to the tin-iodide-enhanced calcium iodide emission.
Method And Apparatus For Expressing Relative Brightness Of Artificial Illumination As Perceived By The Average Observer

Abstract:
Method and apparatus for expressing as a number the relative brightness of artificial illumination as it is perceived by the average observer. There is extracted (i. e. , detected) from the illumination to be measured, a blue-appearing narrow band, a green-appearing narrow band, a yellow-appearing narrow band and a red-orange-appearing narrow band. From these extracted bands are generated six different signals: a signal expressed as (aB) where (a) is about 0. 23 and (B) is the watts of energy in the blue band, a signal expressed as (bG) where (b) is about 0. 97 and (G) is the watts of energy in the green band, a signal expressed as (cR) where (c) is about 0. 33 and (R) is the watts of energy in the red-orange band, a signal expressed as (dY) where (d) is about 0. 19 and (Y) is the watts of energy in the yellow band, a signal expressed as (eG) where (e) is about 0. 25 and (G) is the watts of energy in the green band, and a signal expressed as (fR) where (f) is about 0.
Systems And Methods For Deterministic Emitter Switch Microscopy

International Classification:

Abstract:
Techniques for deterministic switch microscopy include resolving at least one nitrogen vacancy center in a diamond structure. A magnetic field can be applied across the diamond structure and the nitrogen vacancy centers can be optically excited. The nitrogen vacancy centers can be switched from a dark state to a bright state or a bright state by a dark state by applying at least one microwave pulse. A fluorescent response of each nitrogen vacancy center can be detected and a nitrogen vacancy center can be resolved based on the fluorescent response of each nitrogen vacancy center as it corresponds to the orientation of the nitrogen vacancy center relative to the applied magnetic field.

Abstract:
A physically-discrete sign component comprises an internally-electrically-illuminated alphabetic character having a front-facing profile and at least one connecting bar disposed at least substantially horizontally with respect to the front-facing profile of the alphabetic character and at least partially within the front-facing profile of that alphabetic character. By one approach the physically-discrete sign component includes two of the connecting bars. If desired, these two connecting bars are disposed at least substantially parallel to one another. By one approach, a first one of the connecting bars extends partially, but not wholly, above an upper periphery of the aforementioned front-facing profile while the second connecting bar extends partially, but not wholly, below a lower periphery of the front-facing profile. The connecting bars can include a connecting-bar interface configured to physically and electrically interconnect to an adjacent sign component.
