A computer system () that allows a user to automatically access one of a plurality of Internet Service Providers which require information specific to the user and/or the ISP () to be accessed. A smart card () contains the information specific to the user and/or the ISP () to be accessed, and a smart card reader () reads the information contained on the smart card () when inserted into the recess of the smart card reader (). A computer () having a Central Processing Unit CPU () that is in communication with the smart card reader () and which is also adapted to be connected to the ISP () via telephone line (). An application program () resides on the CPU () and is configured to automatically retrieve the information contained on the smart card () when it is inserted into the smart card reader () and to use that information to gain access to one of the plurality of ISPs via the network by using one of a default access number indicating a designated ISP () and a local access number from a database () containing a list of access numbers for the plurality of ISPs along with corresponding location information for each access number in the list. The computer system () may further comprise an online advertising server () for serving advertisement information to the user based on profile information of the information specific to the user contained on the smart card ().
A system for managing digital rights of digital content over a network. A data card contains user information including digital rights information specific to a user, the data card having a memory component for enabling information to be stored within the data card. A data card reader is adapted to access the user information contained on the data card when the data card is in communication therewith. A data processor in communication with the data card reader is adapted to be connected to the network. An application program resides on the memory component of the data card, the application program being configured to operate in conjunction with a universal language for creating and controlling digital rights, to manage user rights of the digital content available on the network based on the digital rights information specific to the user which is contained on the data card.
A computer () is provided having a Central Processing Unit CPU () that is in communication with the smart card reader () and which is also adapted to be connected to the ISP () via telephone line ().
An interactive display extension device for use with a computer system, for displaying certain information to a user without taking up space on the existing computer screen. A memory stores information from the computer system. A processor processes the information stored in the memory. A display, separate from a display of the computer system, displays the information processed by the processor. A user is allowed to interact with the interactive display extension device to request additional information to be displayed.
A portable personal interface for a smartcard comprises a receptacle for receiving the smartcard to facilitate smartcard based transactions comprising one or more sensors of a user's features and a microcomputer for confirming the user's identity. A memory holds stored data representative of features of an authentic user of the card. A sensor on the interface collects data representative of features of the current user of the card, and a microcomputer compares the stored data with the sensed data to determine whether the current user is the authentic user. The features of the authentic user of the card can be stored on the card or in the memory of the interface, in which case the card comprises an identification code that correlates to specific stored data representative of one or more user's features. In the preferred embodiment, the portable personal interface comprises a smartcard sleeve.
An intelligent ID card holder comprises a receptacle for receiving the smartcard to facilitate intelligent ID card based transactions. The card holder further comprises one or more sensors of a user's features and a microcomputer for confirming the user's identity. The holder communicates with the ID card by electrical contacts or RF antenna. The sensor collects data representative of features of the current user of the card, and the microcomputer compares stored data in the memory with the sensed data to determine whether the current user is the authentic user. In a preferred embodiment, the intelligent ID card holder comprises a card holder with a cutaway viewing area showing a portion of the ID card surface, such as a photograph of the authentic user, while the ID card is inserted in the holder.
A smartcard with visual display is provided that enhances identity verification and outputs information stored on the smartcard. For enhanced identity verification, the visual display outputs identifying features of the individual authorized to use the card. For instance, the visual display outputs a sequence of images of the authorized user's face taken from different perspectives. The visual display also outputs information pertaining to the authorized user, such as medical, financial, or contact information. Also disclosed is a smartcard with visual display having multiple users authorized to use the card. Each of the authorized users may have differing levels of access rights.
