Abstract:
A data transmission system for a host computer includes a converter coupled to the host computer and an external data transmission network for converting signals from one form into another, and an isolation circuit for electrically isolating the host computer from the data transmission network. The isolation circuit is placed between the host computer and the converter such that the host computer is electrically isolated from the data transmission network when data transmission is conducted between the host computer and the data transmission network. The isolation circuit digitally isolates the host computer from the external data transmission network such that noise and signal distortion generated by the isolation circuit do not affect the data transmission between the host computer and the data transmission network. The isolation circuit digitally isolates the host computer from the data transmission network such that the isolation circuit can be implemented by opto-couplers and/or transformers and the signal distortion and noise produced by the opto-couplers, transformers, and/or other known means that do not affect the data transmission between the host computer and the external data transmission network.

Abstract:
A system for accessing attribute memory on a card using the interrupt capability of a microcontroller on the PCMCIA card intended to perform I/O functions for the host. The attribute memory interfaces directly with the microcontroller. A PLD is connected between the host bus and the microcontroller decodes the host's bus signals and generates an interrupt signal when it detects a request for access to the attribute memory which signal is supplied to the microcontroller. Upon receipt of the interrupt signal, the microcontroller runs a special routine that accesses attribute memory and supplies the results to the host. The PCMCIA card has a configured state in which the host has read the configuration information from attribute memory and has allocated necessary system resources. The PCMCIA card is in an unconfigured state if the foregoing has not been accomplished. The programmable logic device contains an AND gate having one of its inputs connected to the lines of the bus relating to the I/O function and a second input connected to the microprocessor for receiving a card enable signal, having at least two logic states.

Abstract:
A computer system is described. The computer system includes a bus, a CPU coupled to the bus, and a memory coupled to the bus. A peripheral device is coupled to the bus for performing a predefined peripheral operation. A logic is coupled to the bus and the peripheral device for causing the CPU to be interrupted to control the peripheral device for the peripheral operation when the logic receives a request for the peripheral operation. The logic does not control the peripheral device to perform the peripheral operation. The peripheral operation of the peripheral device is only controlled by the CPU. The request may be generated by a software program running on the CPU. The request may also be generated by the peripheral device. Although the CPU is controlling the peripheral operation, the existing peripheral controller-based application software can still be used. A method for controlling the peripheral device for the peripheral operation is also described.
An initialization strap is disclosed. The initialization strap includes an electronic device capable of receiving a control signal and of transmitting a first output signal in response thereto; a first diode capable of receiving the first output signal, the first diode being forward biased when the first output signal is received and being reverse biased otherwise; a first line over which the electronic device may transmit the first output signal to the first diode; and a first resistor capable of tying the line to a first predetermined voltage level.

Abstract:
A connector system for an add in PC card for supplying network communications functions to a host computer wherein the connector to the network is a RJ type universal jack consisting of a socket and plug. A cavity in the card is formed by an opening in the short dimension of the frame opposite the 68 position connector and the top and bottom covers. A carriage is mounted in the cavity so that it can slide in and out and occupy at least two positions. The carriage consists of a socket portion for making contact with the RJ type plug and a support and contact portion that mechanically supports the carriage within the card and also makes the electrical contact between the carriage and the card. In the first of the two positions, substantially all of the carriage is within the cavity. In the second of the two positions, the socket portion of the carriage is outside of the cavity.
Energy Management System, Method And Device For Maximizing Power Utilization From Alterative Electrical Power Sources
An energy management device of an energy management system includes a first input terminal connecting with a first backup electrical power source; a second input terminal connecting with a second normally on electrical power source; an output terminal connecting with an electrical panel of a facility; a switching device for providing a path between the output terminal and one of the first input terminal and the second input terminal; a current transformer measuring a current flow across the path; and a power management unit configured to control the switching device to switch the path to the first input terminal when a power value calculated based upon at least one of the measured current flow and a measured voltage on the path is greater than a predetermined power rating associated with the second normally on electrical power source, the predetermined power rating greater than zero.
