Abstract:

A clamp apparatus for a jet pump slip joint in a boiling water nuclear reactor pressure vessel includes a C-yoke having an arcuate main portion, an engagement portion extending from a first end of the main portion, and a locking preload portion extending from a second end of the main portion. The engagement portion includes an engagement slot configured to receive a diffuser guide ear. The locking portion includes a threaded clamp bolt opening extending therethrough, and a clamp bolt threadedly engaging and extending through the clamp bolt opening. The clamp bolt includes a locking collar and a plurality of ratchet teeth spaced around the periphery of the locking collar. A locking spring engages the ratchet teeth of the clamp bolt to lock the clamp bolt in place and prevent the bolt from loosening.

Abstract:

Methods for cutting a labyrinth seal in a nuclear reactor jet pump assembly are described. In one embodiment, the method includes removing an irradiated jet pump inlet mixer from the jet pump assembly, positioning the jet pump inlet mixer underwater, and cutting at least one circumferential groove in an inlet mixer outside surface.

Abstract:

A slip joint sealing device for use in piping systems, and particularly in reactor pressure vessels, seals the slip joint between two adjacent pipe surfaces using one or more piston rings positioned in a circumferential groove machined into the outer surface of an inner positioned pipe at the slip joint, and an optional circumferential spring may be employed to retain the piston ring in contact with the inner surface of the adjacent pipe at the slip joint.

Abstract:

A uniform leakage flow device for the slip point of piping systems, and particularly in reactor pressure vessels, selectively imposes a steady, uniform flow of fluid through the slip joint between two adjacent pipe surfaces to thereby eliminate the detrimental flow-induced vibration associated with the unsteady and non-uniform leakage of fluid through the slip joint field. The uniform leakage flow device comprises a plurality of axial grooves that are formed in the wall surface of the slip joint.

Abstract:

A method and a device for detecting a circumferential or thumbnail-shaped transverse crack which has developed in a shaft connecting a driving component (motor) to a driven component (pump) and then estimating crack size. Crack detection and crack size estimation are performed while the machinery is operating. This shaft monitoring device will alert equipment operators that a severe problem is developing. The device will allow the equipment operators to estimate the operating time remaining before the equipment must be shut down for inspection and repair. The method utilizes measurements of fluctuations in the current and voltage in a three-phase induction motor to determine the time-varying motor torque. The computed time-varying torque is converted to the frequency domain using fast Fourier transforms and the rotating element torsional natural frequencies are determined. The torsional natural frequencies are also calculated using conventional finite element techniques for various simulated crack depths.
