Abstract:
A fault associated with a communication medium is analyzed by correlating a first set of information indicative of echo associated with the communication medium with a second set of information indicative of echo. The fault is characterized based on the correlation between the first set of information and the second set of information. The first set of information and the second set of information can include echo canceller coefficients generated by an echo canceller coupled to the communication medium.
A system and method for protection switching in a transmission network is described. A protection switching mechanism comprises a multiplexer, a transmission path for each output of the multiplexer and a remote circuit. The multiplexer has an input coupled to receive an input signal and a plurality of outputs to output a plurality of output signals. Each transmission path is coupled to receive an associated output signal from the multiplexer. The transmission paths further include one or more redundant transmission paths, wherein signals directed to a faulty transmission path are redirected to an associated redundant transmission path. The remote circuit is used to selectively switch a redundant transmission path for a faulty transmission path at a subscriber.

Abstract:
A method for modeling cable loss for a cable plant is provided. The method includes identifying a service to be provided over the cable plant, selectively entering a value corresponding to at least one parameter of the cable plant, and on entering values, determining and displaying the estimated cable loss for the cable plant providing the service based on the entered values and an empirical model of cable loss, the empirical model including data on losses affected by bridge tap placement and bridge tap length in the cable plant.
