Abstract:
A method for chlorinating the pendant methyl groups of poly(p-methylstyrene) with aqueous sodium hypochlorite (e. g. , laundry or swimming pool bleach) and a phase transfer catalyst (e. g. , benzyltriethylammonium chloride) to provide chloromethyl-substituted polystyrenes. Conversions of up to 20 percent of methyl to chloromethyl groups were achieved with no detectable formation of dichloromethyl groups. Conversions of up to 61 percent of methyl to chloromethyl groups occur with less than 4. 4 percent concomitant formation of dichloromethyl groups. The method has been applied to soluble, 1 percent cross-linked, and macroporous 20 percent cross-linked polymers.

Abstract:
Colloidal suspensions of charged polymer particles containing charged metal complexes are prepared from charged polymer colloids by ion exchange. The charged polymer latex particles containing the metal complex are characterized as ranging from about 0. 01 to 1. 5 micrometers in diameter and containing from about 0. 01 to 3. 0 millimoles of metal complex per gram of dry polymer and are useful for catalysis of chemical reactions in aqueous dispersions.

Abstract:
Macroporous styrene polymer particles which have been partially pyrolyzed at temperatures between 300. degree. and 800. degree. C. to form non-functionalized, carbonaceous adsorbents, are functionalized according to this invention to produce weak base, strong base, weak acid or strong acid, dense ion exchange particles, or precursors thereof, using such reactions as halogenation, sulfonation, chloromethylation, chlorosulfonation and oxidation, alone or followed by aminolysis or other conventional functionalization reactions.
