    Methods of utilizing plasma actuating cascade arrays for actively controlling airflow over wind turbine blades are described herein. These methods may include providing plasma actuating cascade arrays that include dielectrics and electrodes. The electrodes and dielectrics are electrically operated to generate plasma clusters, and to induce directional airflows in response to the plasma clusters. The methods may also include configuring the plasma actuating cascade arrays based, at least in part, on characteristics of the wind turbine blades and characteristics of energy generation regimes and scenarios.

    An array of electrodes for selectively generating plasma is described herein. The array includes a first electrode disposed along a first dielectric, and at least a second electrode. A second electrode is sandwiched between the first dielectric and the second dielectric. A power supply provides electrical power to at least the first and second electrodes. In turn, a power supply controller controls the power supply, so as to regulate the electrical power supplied to at least the first and the second electrodes, and to cause the first and second electrodes to generate and move plasma to modify different airflow patterns.

    An ice protection system and method are provided that facilitate the prevention or reduction in ice formation upon an aerodynamic surface. The ice protection system may include at least one induction coil spaced apart from an electrically conductive layer of an aerodynamic surface and disposed interior of an exterior surface of the aerodynamic surface. For example, the ice protection system may include a plurality of induction coils with each induction coil being spaced apart from the other induction coils such that the respective induction coils are associated with different portions of the aerodynamic surface. The ice protection system may also include a signal source configured to provide alternating current to the induction coil(s) to thereby generate an electromagnetic field that creates an eddy current in the electrically conductive layer so as to heat the electrically conductive layer.

    A plasma propulsion nozzle incorporates a cylinder having an inlet and an outlet. A plurality of substantially cylindrical planarly disbanded electrodes with sandwiched dielectric spacers is cascaded in an array to be concentrically expanding from the inlet through an interior chamber to the outlet for a nozzle. A voltage source applies a periodic signal with rapidly reversing polarity to the electrodes with differential phase applied to adjacent electrodes in the array creating and expelling plasma clusters at each dielectric spacer inducing flow from the nozzle outlet to produce thrust.

The electrical system includes an insulated electrical conductor installed in an aircraft and configured to conduct a current over a length of the insulated electrical conductor. The electrical system includes an optical fiber includes a jacket surrounding an optical core, the optical fiber installed adjacent to the insulated electrical conductor. The electrical system includes a photo detector coupled to the optical fiber and configured to detect an electromagnetic signal carried by the optical fiber and at least partially generated as a function of an electrical fault that occurs at a point along the length of the insulated electrical conductor.
