Abstract:
A portable wireless through-the-earth bi-directional communication system for sending and receiving text data using ultra-low-frequency electric current and the earth as the conductive media. A surface controller which executes application software which controls the communication functions of the system. A surface receiver and surface transmitter are connected to sets of electrodes which provide the electric current, and are in communication with the surface controller. Text data are encoded into data packets, modulated onto ultra-low-frequency electric carrier waves, and transmitted through the earth by the surface electrodes to a subsurface transceiver. The subsurface transceiver demodulates, converts and displays incoming signals into text messages. The subsurface transceiver has a user interface to allow subsurface users to submit text data to the surface receiver. The transceiver converts the text data into analog data packets, modulates the packets onto ultra-low-frequency carrier waves, and transmits the signal to the surface receiver.

Abstract:
A telecommunications system which employs commodity simultaneous voice and data (SVD) modems to provide a user with a virtual presence to an office. A first telephony adapter is coupled between a user's home modem and a telephone. A second telephony adapter is coupled between a server modem and the PSTN. The modem data ports are coupled to the PSTN. The first adapter emulates a Central Office (CO) by ringing the telephone, detecting on and off hook conditions from the telephone and supplying line power to the telephone. The first adapter emulates a telephone to the modem voice port by detecting ringing voltages and generating on and off hook conditions. The second adapter emulates a telephone to the PSTN and emulates a telephone to the server modem voice port. The modems establish a connection which enables the user to access a LAN in the office. The home telephone number is forwarded to the server modem and when a call is placed to the user, the call is forwarded by the PSTN to the server adapter.
Modular Electrode Tool For Improved Hydraulic Fracture Diagnostics
Systems and methods for assessing physical properties of a geological formation are disclosed. The systems and methods may use electrodes that include two conductive portions separated by an isolation gap positioned along a casing in a wellbore in the formation. The electrodes may be sequentially energized to provide excitation stimulus into the formation while the remaining, non-energized electrodes may substantially simultaneously receive excitation responses to the excitation stimulus from the formation. The excitation responses may be assessed to determine one or more physical properties of fractures in the formation.
