Abstract:
A method includes steps of (A) detecting an activation of a user input that indicates that the system, or a program executed by the system, has become non-responsive to a user; (B) determining an identification of any currently open files and programs with which currently open files are associated; (C) determining an identification of those programs that are normally not in a non-responsive state; and (D) saving those currently open files that are associated with programs that are identified as being not normally in the non-responsive state. A next step notifies the user that any currently open files that are associated with programs identified as being not normally in the non-responsive state have been saved. In a further step the user may restart the digital data processing system, and retrieve at least one of the saved files. The step of detecting can be executed in response to the user manually activating a switch or by the user activating one or more keyboard keys.

Abstract:
A method is disclosed for operating a digital data processing system, as is a digital data processing system that operates in accordance with the method. The method includes steps of (A) detecting an activation of a user input that indicates that the system or a program executed by the system has become non-responsive to the user; (B) in response to detecting the activation of the user input, transferring to a data storage business entity, through a data communications network, selected user information; and (C) operating the data storage business entity so as to store the transferred user information, and to subsequently retrieve and transfer back to the digital data processing system at least some of the stored user information. Also disclosed is a data storage business entity having a data communications network interface for coupling the data storage business entity to client data processing systems and a controller that is responsive to an arrival of information from a client data processing system for storing the information and for subsequently retrieving and transferring at least some of the retrieved information back to the client data processing system. The controller further operates to charge the client data processing system for at least one of storing the user information, retrieving the stored information, or for being available to store and retrieve the user information.
Method And System For Providing Application Launch By Identifying A User Via A Digital Camera, Utilizing An Edge Detection Algorithm
According the present invention, there is provided a method and system for automatically launching an application in a computing device (e. g. Internet appliance, or the like) by authenticating a user via a digital camera in the computing device, comprising: obtaining a digital representation of the user via the digital camera; filtering the digital representation with an digital edge detection algorithm to produce a resulting digital image; comparing the resulting digital image to a pre-stored digital image of the user; retrieving user information including an application to be launched in response to a successful comparison result, the user information being associated with the pre-stored digital image of the user; and launching the application.
Distributed Intelligent Information Technology Operations Automation
Methods and systems for efficient and effective distribution of system management messages between customer and service provider sites are provided. Customer sites each recognize characteristics of the content of messages distributed by the system and receive only messages relevant to the customer site. System dynamic changes are adapted to such as inter-site communication link interruption or congestion and providing seamless automated information technologies operations during these system dynamic changes. Automated management services are only postponed until such communication link can be restored. Two illustrative embodiments are provided. In one embodiment, system management resides at the service provider site with local system management backup at the customer site. In a second embodiment, system management resides at both the service provider site and customer site.

Abstract:
A method, computer program product, and apparatus for providing context-aware automatic e-mail filtering and reply generation based on message semantics, sender's e-mail ID, and the user's identity is provided. In one embodiment, e-mail received from objectionable sources as determined by the sender's ID or the IP address from which the e-mail originate are deleted. In other embodiments, e-mail containing objectionable content as determined by the presence of objectionable words or phrases or by an objectionable score determined by assigning weights to various words and phrases that exceeds a threshold value. Other embodiments allow for attachments to be forwarded to a parent or system administrator and approval received from the parent or system administrator prior to allowing access to the attachment by the recipient.

US Classification:

Abstract:
A method, apparatus, and computer implemented instructions for backing up data in a data processing system. In response to a request to backup data associated with an application, a data store is queried containing meta data regarding files associated with the application in which the data store includes meta data describing the files accessed by the application. A result is received in response to querying the data store, and contains information about files that need to be backed up. The information is then used to drive the backup program. The files are then subsequently backed up to a storage system.
