Abstract:
Plant pathogen resistance gene (s) present in rice cultivar CO39 and other plant species is disclosed. The locus is referred to as Pi-CO39(t) and confers resistance to strains of the plant pathogen, (causal agent of rice blast and other plant diseases), having a corresponding AVR1 CO39 avirulence gene. Also disclosed are methods of using the resistance gene and its encoded products for improving resistance of plants to this pathogen.

Abstract:
This invention provides a novel avirulence gene from the rice blast pathogen,. The gene, AVR1-CO39, confers cultivar-specific avirulence to strains of that carry the gene. Also disclosed are methods of using the gene and its encoded products for improving resistance of rice to the rice blast pathogen.
