Abstract:

Described is a novel amorphous silica-alumina composition having a high ratio of pore volume contained in large pores to pore volume contained in medium to small pores. The amorphous silica-alumina composition also may have the characteristic of a strong aluminum-NMR penta-coordinated peak representing greater than 30% of the total aluminum and a method of making such novel amorphous silica-alumina composition using a pH swing preparation method.

Abstract:

A method of hydroprocessing a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock using a hydroprocessing catalyst having specific properties making it effective in the hydroconversion of at least a portion of the heavy hydrocarbon feedstock to lighter hydrocarbons. The hydroprocessing catalyst comprises a Group VIB metal component (e. g. , Cr, Mo, and W), a Group VIII metal component (e. g. , Ni and Co) and, optionally, a potassium metal component that are supported on a support material comprising alumina. The alumina has novel physical properties that, in combination with the catalytic components, provide for the hydroprocessing catalyst. The hydroprocessing catalyst is particularly effective in the conversion of the heavy hydrocarbon feedstock. The alumina is characterized as having a high pore volume and a high surface area with a large proportion of the pore volume being present in the pores within a narrow pore diameter distribution about a narrowly defined range of median pore diameters. The support material preferably does not contain more than a small concentration of silica.

Abstract:

Alumina having a pore structure characterized by the absence of macropores, no more than 5% of the total pore volume in pores greater than 350 , a high pore volume (greater than 0.8 cc/g measured by mercury intrusion) and a bi-modal pore volume distribution character, where the two modes are separated by 10 to 200 , and the primary pore mode is larger than the median pore diameter (MPD), calculated either by volume or by surface area, the MPD by volume being itself larger than the MPD by surface area. Also provided are catalysts made from and processes using such alumina.
