Abstract:

Systems, including methods, apparatus, and algorithms, for spectrally imaging a two-dimensional array of samples are disclosed. In one such system, a method of sample analysis includes directing light from a two-dimensional array of examination sites onto a detection area such that dispersed light of known spectral composition from each site falls on the detection area. The method further includes assigning a corresponding two-dimensional array of regions of the detection area for detecting spectra from the examination sites based, at least in part, on the known spectral composition. The method also includes placing samples into the two dimensional array of examination sites and obtaining spectral data for each sample based on the detection area.

Abstract:

A method for producing an apparatus for transferring small amounts of liquids includes bonding a plurality of parallel fibers having plural coaxial layers into a bundle, slicing the bundle of parallel fibers in planes perpendicular to the direction of the fibers to form two opposite, planar surfaces, and selectively etching the fiber layers to create etched wells in the fibers at one of the planar surfaces. The etched wells are in fluid communication with corresponding capillary nozzles of the fibers that extend to an opposite one of the planar surfaces. Various apparatus configurations of the present invention include liquid transfer devices manufactured utilizing one or more of the various method configurations of the present invention. By way of example only, a bundle of three-layer optical fibers or a bundle of hollow two-layer optical fibers may be utilized to produce a liquid transfer device.

A microfluidic device may include a sample distribution network including a plurality of sample chambers configured to be loaded with biological sample for biological testing of the biological sample while in the sample chambers, the biological sample having a meniscus that moves within the sample chambers during loading. The sample distribution network may further include a plurality of inlet channels, each inlet channel being in flow communication with and configured to flow biological sample to a respective sample chamber, and a plurality of outlet channels, each outlet channel being in flow communication and configured to flow biological sample from a respective sample chamber. At least some of the sample chambers may include a physical modification configured to control the movement of the meniscus so as to control bubble formation within the at least some sample chambers. At least some of the sample chambers may include a dried reagent positioned within the at least some sample chambers proximate the inlet channels in flow communication with the at least some sample chambers.
