Abstract:

A remote control and tactile feedback system for a medical apparatus, such as a patient ventilator. The ventilator provides a signal having a property indicative of a desired parameter, such as airway pressure or tidal volume. The system has a member suitable for being received in the hand of a user, such as a clinician. A movable trigger is suitable for being engaged by the fingers of the user. An electrical-mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic force applying element is coupled to the trigger for applying a force to the fingers of the user responsive to the parameter signal. A tactile sensation of the desired parameter is thus provided to the user. The trigger is coupled to a signal generator for providing a control signal to the ventilator.

Abstract:

An arrangement and method for detecting spontaneous respiratory effort of a patient receiving ventilatory support by a breathing circuit. The nasal cannula control system includes a nasal cannula assembly having two distinct lumens. A different pressure sensor is positioned to detect the pressure difference between each of the two lumens, thereby determining the differential pressure from within the patient's nostrils and within a breathing mask. The nasal cannula control system includes a gas sampling system such that the amount of a monitored gas discharged or exhaled by the patient can be monitored using the same nasal cannula assembly used to generate the differential pressure signal.

A patient/breathing circuit interface is adapted to provide a closed connection between a breathing passage of the patient and the breathing circuit. Abstract:

A breathing circuit for use with a ventilated patient that includes a heat exchanger for removing water vapor from the breathing gases to prevent condensation within the breathing circuit. The heat exchanger is positioned downstream from the COabsorber and receives the breathing gases from the COabsorber prior to delivery of the breathing gases to the inspiration limb of the patient circuit. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of inflow tubes and outflow tubes that are each open to a sump removably attached to the heat exchanger. The sump collects the water vapor condensed from the breathing gases within the heat exchanger.

Abstract:

A multiple lumen nasal cannula that can be used to delivery two separate supplies of gases to a patient. The multiple lumen nasal cannula includes a first lumen for delivering a first gas and a second lumen for delivering a second gas. The first lumen includes support structure that reduces the tendency of the cannula to kink and lock the delivery of gas to a patient. The cannula assembly includes a mixing chamber positioned near the patient such that the two supplies of gas are not mixed until a location approximate to delivery to the patient. The nasal cannula assembly includes a connecting device that allows the two separate supplies of gas to be correctly delivered to the two different lumens of the nasal cannula.

Abstract:

A system and method for monitoring the arterial gas concentrations of a patient receiving percutaneous oxygenator support. The system comprises a percutaneous oxygenator for providing medical gases to the venous system of the patient via a catheter. Gases are also removed from the venous system via a catheter. The concentrations and flow rates of the gases provided and removed from the patient are monitored. A CPU analyzes the concentration and flow rate information to compute the arterial gas concentration of the patient.

Abstract:

A system for the delivery of a liquid anesthetic agent to a sump of an anesthetic vaporizer includes a filler assembly rotatable about a pivot point. The filler assembly further includes a sump valve that controls fluid communication between the filler assembly and the sump. An adapter is coupled with the filler spout and includes a sealing surface that forms a seal against fluid communication between the anesthetic bottle and the adapter. The filler assembly, the filler spout, and the adapter are rotated about the pivot point along the rail. The rotation of the filler assembly, the filler spout, and the adapter about the pivot point opens the sump valve and the seal between the adapter and the anesthetic bottle.

Abstract:

A collapsible reservoir system is disclosed herein. The collapsible reservoir system includes a first tube pneumatically connected to the collapsible reservoir, and a second tube pneumatically connected to the collapsible reservoir. The second tube is configured to generally remain open in the absence of an externally applied compressive force. The second tube is positioned relative to the collapsible reservoir such that a compressive force applied to the collapsible reservoir can also compress and thereby restrict the second tube. A corresponding method for controlling the pressure of a collapsible reservoir system is also provided.
