Abstract:

A medical lubricant suitable for injection into the blood stream of a patient. The lubricant is suitable for use with rotating equipment such as atherectomy drive shafts moving within sheaths and over guide wires and other minimally invasive medical devices introduced into a patient through a catheter like instrument. The lubricant is an oil-in-water emulsion including a surfactant, a co-surfactant, and a pH buffer. The lubricant can further include a cryogenic agent and a pH adjusting agent. One lubricant includes olive oil as an emulsified oil, egg yolk phospholipid as a surfactant, sodium deoxycholate as a co-surfactant, glycerin as a cryogenic agent, L-histidine as a pH buffer, and is pH adjusted using sodium hydroxide. The lubricant also includes a therapeutic agent. The lubricant can withstand freeze/thaw cycles as well as saline dilution, heating, and shear stress without significant creaming, separation, or unacceptable increases in oil droplet size.

Abstract:

A method for forming a laminated sheet material from a slurry having a liquid component. The method comprising the steps of: applying the slurry to a substrate in successive layers to form a wet sheet of predetermined thickness; applying at least one of the layers by spattering; removing the wet sheet from the substrate; and drying or curing the wet sheet so as to remove at least a substantial proportion of the liquid component and thereby forming the sheet material.

Abstract:

Methods for preserving ophthalmic compositions are disclosed. In one embodiment, such compositions include a liquid medium and an antimicrobial component which is preferably substantially non-oxidative. Compositions which include a liquid medium and antimicrobial peptide magainins, present in an amount effective as a preservative, are also disclosed. Abstract:

A composite product comprising a substrate layer and one or more functional layers applied thereto. The slurry is applied to the substrate layer to form a functional layer and the functional layer dewatered through the substrate layer. Abstract:

This invention relates to a method of reducing an irritating or adverse side effect associated with the topical use of an active ophthalmic drug comprising incorporating an effective amount of a cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative into a formulation to complex the active drug such that the concentration of the free active drug is reduced below a tolerable threshold, and incorporating an effective amount of a viscosity increasing agent in said formulation such that the bioavailability of said drug is high enough to be therapeutically effective, wherein the cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative is not required to solubilize the active drug. Another aspect of this invention relates to topical ophthalmic formulations comprising an active drug, a cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative, and a viscosity-enhancing agent, in effective amounts as stated above.
