  • International Classification:
    H01H 900
  • US Classification:
    361160, 361170, 361187
  • Abstract:
An electromagnetic operator includes first and second coils wound coaxially. An armature partially surrounds the coils for channeling flux during energization of the coils. The armature may be formed of a bent plate and secured to a ferromagnetic support. A control circuit applies energizing signals to the coils during operation. Both coils are energized during an initial phase of operation. One of the coils is subsequently released or de-energized automatically. A timing circuit removes current from the second coil after a variable time period. The time period may be a function of the configuration of the timing circuit, such as an RC time constant, and of the energizing signal.

  • Heating Circuit For An Electric Motor

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41953240, Mar 25, 1980
  • Filed:
    Jul 26, 1978
  • Appl. No.:
    5/928303
  • Inventors:
Richard W. Waltz - Milwaukee WI
  • Assignee:
    Allen-Bradley Company - Milwaukee WI
  • International Classification:
    H02H 708
  • US Classification:
    361 25
  • Abstract:
An SCR is connected across one of three line contacts which couple the power lines to the windings of an a. c. motor. When the line contacts are opened to shut down the motor, heating current is applied to one of the motor windings through the SCR to raise its temperature above the ambient dew point. The SCR is fired every cycle of the line current and the firing angle is controlled in response to a command signal to provide the proper amount of heating current in the motor winding. The command signal is generated by summing a preselected reference signal with a negative feedback signal which is indicative of the amount of motor heating.

  • Overload Current Protection Apparatus

  • US Patent:
    52837084, Feb 1, 1994
  • Filed:
    Sep 23, 1992
  • Appl. No.:
    7/950984
  • Inventors:
Richard W. Waltz - Milwaukee WI
  • Assignee:
Allen-Bradley Company, Inc. - Milwaukee WI
  • International Classification:
    H02H 708
  • US Classification:
    361 93
  • Abstract:
A device protects an electric load, such as a motor, from excessive current levels. The current flows from a source to the load through a switch and a primary winding of a current sensing transformer. The voltage across a secondary winding of the current sensing transformer is rectified to produce a voltage which is measured to determine the level of current through the load. The voltage across the secondary winding also powers components of the device. In a first mode of operation, current from the secondary winding is applied to charge a power supply capacitor. In a second mode of operation the level of the rectified voltage is sensed to produce a sample of the level of the current flowing through the load. From this sample the change in temperature of the load since a previous sample is calculated and used to derive the present load temperature. When the present load temperature exceeds a defined threshold level, the switch is opened to disconnect the load from the electricity source.

  • International Classification:
    H01H 7300
  • US Classification:
    361115
  • Abstract:
An electrical contactor includes an electromagnetic operator which may be powered by either AC or DC power. For use with AC power, a rectifier circuit converts AC waveforms to DC waveforms and applies the converted power to DC one or more DC coils. The rectifier circuitry applies DC power directly to a bus. A pair of coils may be used, such as separate pickup and holding coils. The pickup coil may be de-energized after an initial phase of operation. To permit rapid release of the holding coil, a control circuit interrupts an induced current path through the coil upon removal of power from the bus.
  • Circuit And Method For Automatically Resetting A Solid State Relay

    view source
  • US Patent:
    56571941, Aug 12, 1997
  • Filed:
    Jul 28, 1995
  • Appl. No.:
    8/508771
  • Inventors:
Richard W. Waltz - Franklin WI
  • Assignee:
Allen-Bradley Company, Inc. - Milwaukee WI
  • International Classification:
    H02H 500
  • US Classification:
    361 75
  • Abstract:
A reset circuit for an overload relay includes a timing circuit coupled to a switching circuit for automatically resetting the relay a predetermined time after a trip. The timing circuit includes a capacitor and a resistor in parallel with a reset coil. The capacitor is charged during normal operation and begins to discharge through the resistor following a trip at a first rate determined by the size of the resistor. The switching circuit includes a pair of transistors, a pair of capacitors and a pair of resistors. When the capacitor in the timing circuit has discharged a predetermined amount following a trip, the switching circuit is triggered and couples the capacitor to ground through one of the transistors, causing a rush of current through the reset coil sufficient to reset the relay.
