  • Four Wheel Steering Having Closed Hydraulic System With Pressure Relief

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48301280, May 16, 1989
  • Filed:
    Dec 28, 1987
  • Appl. No.:
    7/138763
  • Inventors:
Peter S. Winckler - Birmingham MI
David M. Preston - Spoon MI
  • Assignee:
    Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    B62D 508
  • US Classification:
    180140
  • Abstract:
A closed hydraulic system (22) is provided for transmitting steering movement to a rear wheel steering assembly (16) in response to steering movement of a front wheel steering assembly (14). The front wheel steering assembly is controlled by a steering wheel (18) and a power steering assembly (20). The closed hydraulic system (22) includes a pump assembly (44) and an actuator assembly (46) connected together by conduits (48,50) to define closed fluid flow branches or fluid links (49,51) for moving a piston (94) in the actuator assembly in response to movement of a piston (72) in the pump assembly. Movement of the actuator piston is transmitted to the rear wheel steering assembly via a cam assembly (92) which effects same direction rear wheel steering for rather small front wheel steering angles and which effects opposite direction rear wheel steering for greater front wheel steering angles. System (22) may include a reservoir assembly (60) including a piston assembly (116) for maintaining a constant positive pressure in both branches, a dash pot (124) for preventing sudden steering angle changes of the rear wheels in the event of rapid fluid loss in either branch, and relief valve assemblies (126,126') for limiting the maximum pressure differential between the branches.
  • Clutch With Pyrolytic Carbon Friction Material

  • US Patent:
    47008237, Oct 20, 1987
  • Filed:
    Mar 28, 1980
  • Appl. No.:
    6/134842
  • Inventors:
Peter S. Winckler - Birmingham MI
  • Assignee:
    Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F16D 1364
    F16D 6902
  • US Classification:
    192107M
  • Abstract:
Disclosed is a locking differential (10) including an oil lubricated clutch assembly (18) having a plurality of interleaved friction discs (48, 50, 60, and 62) formed of steel and squeezed together to retard relative rotation of differential side gears (32 and 34). Adjacent friction discs have mutually facing friction surfaces. One of each mutually facing friction surface is defined by the metal forming the disc and the other surface is defined by a pyrolytic carbon composite friction material (78). In one form, the friction material includes a meshed cloth substrate formed of carbon fibers, which may be woven into a single layer of cloth, and a coating of carbon deposited on the fibers by chemical vapor deposition to a level forming a friction material having a relatively open mesh which is readily penetrated by an adhesive to improve bonding of the friction material to the discs.

  • Exclusion Seal Assembly

  • US Patent:
    48487767, Jul 18, 1989
  • Filed:
    Apr 27, 1987
  • Appl. No.:
    7/042776
  • Inventors:
Peter S. Winckler - Birmingham MI
  • Assignee:
    Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F16C 3376
    F16J 1532
    F16J 1534
    F16J 1554
  • US Classification:
    277 23
  • Abstract:
A seal assembly (22 or 50) including a primary seal (26), an exclusion seal (28 or 52), and a contaminant absorbing material (30 or 54). The exclusion seal and absorbing material extend the life of the primary seal. The exclusion seal is of the face seal type and includes spacer means (40, 42, 38 or 62, 64, 56) for proper positioning of a sealing lip (34d or 60a) of an elastomeric seal member (34 or 60) relative to an axial facing sealing surface (36a or 58c). The absorbing material (30 or 54) is disposed between the exclusion seal and the primary seal for absorbing contaminants which get by the exclusion seal. The axially facing sealing surface (36a or 58c) may be defined by a frustonconical surface such as provided by a spring washer (44). The seal assembly (50) includes circumferentially, radially spaced vanes (62d) for centrifuging contaminants radially outward and into the absorbing material.
  • Push-Pull Caliper

  • US Patent:
    43196683, Mar 16, 1982
  • Filed:
    Dec 26, 1979
  • Appl. No.:
    6/106617
  • Inventors:
Roger R. Johnson - Union Lake MI
Charles W. Kleinhagen - Livonia MI
Richard F. Neuman - Farmington MI
Peter S. Winckler - Birmingham MI
  • Assignee:
    Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
  • International Classification:
    F16D 55224
  • US Classification:
    188 724
  • Abstract:
A vehicular disc brake in which the backing plate of the inboard brake pad assembly includes holes which capture guide rails carried by spaced arm portions of the torque plate and the backing plate of the outboard brake pad assembly is pinned to the outboard web of the caliper. The various clearances are selected such that, upon application of the brake, the inboard backing plate pulls on one of the guide rails to transmit the braking torque exerted on the inboard pad assembly to one arm of the torque plate and the caliper pushes against the other guide rail to transmit the braking torque exerted on the outboard pad assembly to the other arm of the torque plate.
