An improved two-piece container seal suitable for sealing a container having a removable closure and for lining the closure comprises a flexible sealant sheet and a flexible liner sheet bonded thereto. The sealant sheet and liner sheet are of the same size and shape. The sealant sheet has a sealing surface and a first thermoplastic surface, and the liner sheet has an outer surface and a second thermoplastic surface. The first and second thermoplastic surfaces are in opposed, congruent contact with each other, and the first thermoplastic surface is ultrasonically welded to the second thermoplastic surface by an array of spaced, frangible ultrasonic welds, forming an adhesive-free interface therebetween. A method of manufacturing a two-piece container seal and a sealed container comprising a two-piece container seal are also described.

Abstract:
A heat-sealable container seal having a integral, heat-releasable promotional token attached thereto comprises a promotional token bound to a sealant sheet by a layer of wax. At least one of the surfaces of the promotional token and the sealant sheet that contacts the layer of wax is capable of absorbing liquid wax when the layer of wax is melted. At least one surface of the promotional token has promotional indicia visible thereon. The sealant sheet has a heat-sealable container contacting surface. Preferably, at least one of the promotional token and the sealant sheet includes a layer of metal foil. In use, the container seal provides a seal over the access opening of a container and also provides a promotional token, such as a redeemable coupon, within the container closure, loosely disposed over the seal.

Abstract:
A container seal having a releasable, integral promotional token attached thereto comprises a sealing sheet bound to a promotional token by a releasable adhesive. The sealant sheet has a tacking surface and a sealing surface. The promotional token has a tacking surface and an obverse surface. At least one surface of the promotional token has promotional indicia visible thereon. The tacking surface of the promotional token is bound to the tacking surface of the sealant sheet by a releasable adhesive, so that the promotional token is peelably removable from the sealant sheet when the sealant sheet is bound to the finish of a container. In a preferred embodiment, the obverse surface of the promotional token is bound to a compressible liner by a second layer of releasable adhesive, the liner being separable from the promotional token without separating the promotional token from the sealing sheet. Preferably, the promotional indicia are in the form of a redeemable coupon, a proof-of-purchase indicator, or a game token.
Container Sealing Material Having A Heat-Releasable Interlayer
An container sealing material suitable for sealing a container comprises a liner sheet (liner), a sealant sheet, and an interlayer portion (interlayer) bound between the liner and the sealant sheet by individual layers of wax. The material has a closure-contacting surface and a heat-sealable surface. At least one of the surfaces of the liner and the interlayer that contacts a layer of wax is capable of absorbing liquid wax when the layer of wax is melted. At least one of the surfaces of the sealant sheet and interlayer which contacts a layer of wax is capable of absorbing liquid wax when the layer of wax is melted. The liner and the sealant sheet each release from the interlayer when sufficient heat is applied to the container sealing material to melt the layers of wax. The interlayer can include printed matter visible on one or both of its surfaces (e. g. , a logo, proof-of-purchase indicator, and the like).

The promotional token consists of a material selected from the group consisting of a layer of paper or synthetic fabric, a layer of paper or synthetic fabric laminated to a polymer film, and a layer of paper or synthetic fabric laminated to two polymer films, and optionally, the tacking surface of the promotional token or the tacking surface of the sealant sheet comprises a release coating.
Two-Piece Container Seal And Method Of Manufacture
The present invention provides an improved method of preparing a two-piece container seal. The method comprises contacting a first thermoplastic surface of a moving web of a first flexible sheet material with a second thermoplastic surface of a moving web of a second flexible sheet material, the webs of first and second flexible sheet material moving at substantially the same speed and in the same direction; ultrasonically forming at least one array of spaced, frangible ultrasonic welds between the first and second thermoplastic surfaces, thereby producing a flexible multilayer sheet material having an adhesive-free interface between the first and second thermoplastic surfaces thereof; and cutting a container seal from the multilayer sheet material.
An improved container seal comprises a flexible sealant sheet and a flexible tab sheet bonded thereto. The sealant sheet and tab sheet are of the same size and shape. The sealant sheet has a sealing surface and a first thermoplastic surface, and the tab sheet has an outer surface and a second thermoplastic surface. The first and second thermoplastic surfaces are in opposed, congruent contact with each other, and a portion of the first thermoplastic surface is ultrasonically welded to an opposed portion of the second thermoplastic surface. The ultrasonically welded portions of the thermoplastic surfaces are positioned on the sealant sheet and tab sheet in a manner that allows at least one edge portion of the tab sheet to be lifted away from the sealant sheet, providing a tab member for removing the seal from a container.
An improved container seal including at least one metal-free tab member is provided. The container seal comprises a flexible, metal-free cover sheet and a flexible sealant sheet. The cover sheet comprises at least one layer of a flexible sheet material and includes a body portion that is sized and shaped to at least cover a container finish and has at least one metal-free tab portion extending from the periphery of the body portion. The flexible sealant sheet comprises a thermoplastic sealing surface layer, an inner surface layer and a layer of metal foil. The flexible sealant sheet is of the same size and shape as the body portion of the cover sheet. The inner surface of the sealant sheet and the inner surface of the body portion of the cover sheet are bonded together in opposed, congruent contact with each other. A method of manufacturing the container seal is also provided.
