A modem uses information from prior calls in a current call if the current communication line is similar to the communication line of a prior call. During modem training, the current communication line is compared to a communication line used during at least one prior call. If the characteristics are substantially similar, stored data mode information from the prior call(s) is used to design a signal constellation for use during the current call's data mode. If the number of prior calls exceeds a value, then the signal constellation may be designed using previously stored data mode information without using information from the current call's training mode. If the number of prior calls does not exceed the value, then the signal constellation may be designed using the previously stored data mode information and information from the current call's training mode.

Abstract:
A system for, and method of, recognizing zero-amplitude symbols in a quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signal and a digital receiver incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) an amplitude detector that extracts a candidate symbol from the signal and locates the candidate symbol relative to a constellation of symbols and (2) a zero-amplitude symbol interpreter, associated with the amplitude detector, that recognizes the candidate symbol as being a zero-amplitude symbol when the candidate symbol is closer to an origin of the constellation than to symbols proximate thereto.

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for compensating for Doppler induced carrier frequency offset in a digital receiver. According to one aspect of the invention, a received signal is digitized and a differential detection algorithm is applied to the digitized received signal to compensate for the Doppler induced carrier frequency offset. A symbol timing recovery algorithm can also be applied to the digitized received signal to compensate for symbol timing offset.

International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for processing a signal received on a channel. The intersymbol interference on the channel is initially evaluated and a detection method is selected from a plurality of available detection methods based on the intersymbol interference evaluation. For example, the plurality of available detection methods may include a differential detection technique and an equalization-based technique. The equalization technique may be, for example, a decision feedback equalization technique. The intersymbol interference evaluation may comprise, for example, a comparison of the signal to noise ratio at an output of a differential detector for at least a portion of a frame to a predefined threshold.
