Abstract:
A preferred method includes displaying a plurality of indicia-bearing game pieces on a gaming grid. A player then selects game pieces that are adjacent and that have matching indicia. Preferably, the matching adjacent game pieces that are selected are then removed from the gaming grid. One or more prizes are awarded in association with the selection and removal of the matching adjacent game pieces. Preferably, the player is also provided with the ability to shuffle any remaining non-selected game pieces , after all matching adjacent game pieces that are perceived by the player are selected and removed. In this regard, it is possible that the player may overlook some matching adjacent game pieces. Additionally, some preferred embodiment gaming methods incorporate the use of multiple indicia on each game piece for potentially matching with adjacent game pieces. Finally, awards can be awarded to a player based upon game speed and the number of shuffles required to clear the grid , amongst other criteria.
A timed gaming event has a start time, a defined duration, and an end time. In one embodiment, the timed gaming event comprises a period of time during which the payout for winning results is enhanced, such as by a multiplier. In another embodiment, the timed event is a tournament in which players of multiple gaming machines play a plurality of games. The winner(s) of the tournament is determined by the aggregate outcomes of each player's play of the multiple games during the event, such as the player having the highest aggregated winnings for games played during the event. Another event is a timed bonus period of a main game, during which a player is provided the opportunity to play a bonus game for enhanced winnings.

A gaming system is configured to present a bonus event at one or more gaming machines. The gaming machines may be configured to present base wagering games. A bonus server may monitor play at the gaming machines and trigger a bonus event. The bonus event server may be configured to dynamically modify the bonus event trigger based upon the number of gaming machines in play to keep the odds of triggering the bonus event relatively constant. The bonus event may comprise a timed bonus event, such as a tournament in which players of active gaming machines have the opportunity to play one or more free games.
Gaming Machines With Communication Links Configured To Present Bonus Games
Gaming machines include telecommunication devices, such as telephones, so that calls may be placed to the player of the machine and/or so that calls maybe placed from the machine to a remote location. A game includes the opportunity to involve a third party participant located remote from the gaming machine, in the play of the game via a telecommunication link. In one embodiment, a game includes a base game having the opportunity for one or more bonus or secondary events. One event includes the opportunity to call a participant, with the player and participant provided the opportunity to play a game for winnings, such as money, prizes or points. Another event involves calls to the player as part of an opportunity of the player to win winnings, such as money, prizes or points.
A method of game play includes a base game and a bonus event. The outcome of the base game is determined and, if it is a bonus event initiating outcome, the bonus event is initiated. A bonus event time period is determined. As many bonus games as possible are presented or played during the bonus event time period. At the end of the time period, the bonus event is terminated. In one embodiment, a player is awarded credits for bonus game wins, with total win values aggregated during the bonus event period. A timer displays remaining bonus event time.
