Abstract:

The vehicle hybrid apparatus provides a combined electrical unit that provides three functions that are starter motor, generator, and auxiliary drive motor. The apparatus attaches to a vehicle in typical starter motor location, with starter motor mounts being used. The pinion gear of the combined electrical unit is continuously engaged with the existing flywheel of the existing fuel engine. Electrical components of the apparatus are connected to existing automobile components and, together, these decide which function, whether starter motor, generator, or drive motor is employed.

Abstract:

An optical homodyne microscope is disclosed which detects phase modulation of the optical radiation that is reflected from an object under study which is in a state of periodic motion. The dimensions of the object may be smaller than the optical wavelength with this technique. By analyzing the resultant phase modulation spectrum, information concerning the shape of the object can be obtained.

Abstract:

Systems which utilize an optical signal to carry information and employ a ree-wave heterodyne detector of the type having a cubic response do not require a local optical signal source in the receiving apparatus since the optical signal as generated provides two optical signal components for the detector's operation. The third signal is supplied by a local microwave oscillator. A high resolution optical wave ranging system having an improved field-of-view is disclosed which uses such a composite signal in conjunction with a pair of three-wave heterodyne detectors.

Abstract:

An arrangement for frequency modulating a laser beam utilizes an optical prism which is disposed within the laser cavity such that the beam continuously experiences total internal reflection from one face thereof as an optical element having an index of refraction which is less than that of the prism is displaced so as to come in contact with this face and/or move variable distances therefrom. The external optical path of the beam, which exists beyond this face during total internal reflection is, thus, changed. This corrresponds to an effective change in the dimensions of the laser cavity and an appropriate shift in the frequency of the laser output beam. Amplitude modulation of the beam can also be achieved by placing the above components outside of the cavity and changing the direction of polarization of the beam entering the optical prism.
