Abstract:

A user-retainable monitoring system is disclosed. At least a pair of sensors is provided in association with a support member. The support member is preferably of a type that may be worn by or at least temporarily implanted in a patient. Possible sensor types include temperature sensors and impedance sensors. Temperature sensors may be used to detect a temperature differential between areas of tissue indicative of pathology. Impedance sensors are used to detect subcutaneous fluid detection. The support member may take the form of a bandage, drain or other structure. Monitor structures as described may have stand-alone utility or be connected to a processor or data recorder to enable various functions.

Abstract:

Disclosed are methods of determining long-term deposition pattern of a compound in tissue. The following steps can be followed: placing tissue against a receptor; directing mid-infrared electromagnetic radiation onto the tissue; quantifying the electromagnetic radiation that is reflected from the tissue to obtain a reflected amount; using a calibration equation to calculate the concentration of a compound from the reflected amount; and using the concentration of the compound to evaluate presence of a clinical condition in the tissue.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus is provided for measuring a sterol, such as cholesterol, deposited in the skin. Light of two or more wavelengths is emitted toward or into a skin sample and the light is differentially absorbed by the sterol in the skin sample. The differentially absorbed light is detected and the amount of sterol in the skin sample is determined based on the differential absorption.
