Abstract:

The present invention relates to a system and method that delivers content from one or more content sources to a plurality of subscriber units via a flow transport subsystem that transports content flows originated from the one or more content sources over a wide area network in response to one or more requests for deadline-driven content flows. E. g. , live or interactive flows. One or more gateways interface with the flow transport subsystem for receiving the deadline-driven content flows. Each of the one or more gateways is associated with one or more subscriber units and is selected based on one or more requests for deadline-driven content flows. A content processor converts the deadline-driven content flows to modulated content flows, and a flow delivery subsystem delivers the modulated content flows to one or more subscriber units associated with a selected gateway over an allocated frequency bandwidth of one or more transmission mediums. The flow delivery subsystem delivers the modulated content flows only to those one or more subscriber units that generate one or more content requests which initiate the one or more requests for deadline-driven content flows.

Abstract:

A communication system in which client and server communication systems are coupled over a data network. A request to communicate with one of the server communication systems is accepted and based on an identification of the server communication system in the request, one of a set of transport layer protocols is selected for communication between the client and server systems. The set of transport layer protocols can be determined by retrieving information from a directory service computer, such as an Internet Domain Name Server (DNS), where the address of the directory service computer is related to the identification of the server communication system. In addition, the server communication system can include an address translation table that associates a network address provided by a client communication system with local network addresses of server computers. The server communication system selects one of the server computers in response to a request from the client communication system and passes communication between the client system and the selected server computer.

Abstract:

A communication system for improving communication over a data network between an application and remote systems where each of the remote systems is configured to communicate using at least one of multiple transport layer communication protocols. The communication system accepts a request from the application to communicate with one of the remote systems, selects a transport layer communication protocols for communicating with the requested remote system, and communicates using the selected transport protocol with the requested system. In addition, the system may select one of multiple network layer communication protocols to communicate with the requested remote system. The application may be configured to communicate using a first of the transport protocols and request to communicate with a remote system using that first protocol, while the selected protocol may be another protocol. Furthermore, in one feature, the selected transport layer protocol supports selective retransmission while the requested protocol does not support selective retransmission. In another feature, the selected communication protocol supports transmission rate control while the requested protocol does not support transmission rate control.

Abstract:

When establishing a communication path between a client system and a server system which are coupled over a data network, the client system accesses distributed directory information in order to determine whether a communication path to the server computer can use an enhanced communication approach, such as an enhanced transport or application layer protocol, and to obtain an address of a second server system which will provide communication services needed to communicate using the enhanced communication approach. By using distributed information, and in particular by distributing the information at the server systems themselves, the invention reduces or eliminates the reliance on critical points of failure or congestion, such as a Internet Domain Name Server (DNS) or a centralized repository of information related to the enhanced communication.

Abstract:

According to the present invention, programs that use signals, such as multi-media signals, received over communication channels from one or more sources are produced in a computing system by executing an application software in one or more servers of the computing system. At least one of the servers has one or more processors that process defined logical entities. A signal used in production of a program is received from a source over a communication channel at a server. An input logical entity having attributes associated with the source of the signal is defined such that the input logical entity is responsive to a user defined predicate comprising a logical expression for accepting or rejecting the signal. Also defined are a stream logical entity that identifies an accepted signal and a routing logical entity that establishes a connection between the stream logical entity and a destination. The accepted signal is routed to the destination based on a routing rule.

Abstract:

An example method comprises receiving, at a first digital device, video data, scanning video content of the video data for visual transitions within the video content between consecutive frames of the video data, each transition indicating significant visual transitions relative to other frames of the video data, timestamping each visual transition and create a first set of temporal video fingerprints, identifying items of metadata to be associated with the video data, identifying a location within the video data using the temporal video fingerprints for the identified items of metadata, generating a metadata index identifying each item of metadata and a location for each item of metadata relative to the video data using at least one of the temporal video fingerprints, and transmitting, at the first digital device, the video data, the first set of temporal video fingerprints, and the metadata index to a different digital device.
