A fastener apparatus comprises in combination, a mechanical binding device such as a staple. The staple engages substrates such as sheets of paper forming a document. A microcomputer is mounted integrally with the staple and includes a data storage device such as a solid state memory providing a capacity for receiving and transferring a quantity of digital data. The microcomputer also provides a data processing device such as a microprocessor which provides a capacity for calculation using the digital data. A bi-directional data transfer port is adapted for receiving the digital data for transfer to the data storage device and to the data processing device and for transferring the digital data from the data storage device and from the data processing device. Data may be stored and retrieved electrostatically, magnetically, optically and mechanically so as to identify the document for identification and retrieval.
Substance Detection And Alarm Using A Spectrometer Built Into A Steering Wheel Assembly
A spectrometer for infrared reflectance measurements of samples for identification of the sample materials is built into a steering wheel assembly. The spectrometer includes a window and optics on a bench adjacent the window, so that the optics will be aligned with the sample when the device is placed in optical alignment with or directly against the sample. The optics include a broad-band IR light source (ordinary lamp) shining onto an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF), which passes narrow-band IR light with a swept frequency; a lens focusing the IR through the window onto the sample; and a reflectance detector aligned with the window of the spectrometer to pick up reflected light. A computer, which may be mounted in the spectrometer, compares the detected reflectance spectrum with stored sample data spectra, and identifies the material or the components of the material and their proportions. When a control substance is detected an alarm signal is produced.
Engagement Of A Sensor System With A Vehicle Operating Device
A steering wheel has a structural skeleton forming a core within an outer covering, the covering and skeleton forming a hub portion having at least one arm interconnecting the hub portion with an outer wheel portion. The skeleton within the outer wheel portion has a U-shaped cross sectional conformation. A wire harness is positioned within the U-shaped conformation of the outer wheel portion and a plurality of ethanol detectors are mounted in spaced apart relationship within the outer wheel portion and adjacent to an outer surface of the steering wheel. The ethanol detectors communicate with the wire harness and an electrical circuit, the circuit engaging the hub portion of the skeleton. The circuit is in communication with the wire harness for receiving electrical signals from the ethanol detectors for sensing ethanol vapors in proximity to at least one of the ethanol detectors.

Abstract:
A thermal treatment apparatus is built around an enclosure having pairs of separate compartments with each pair separated by a portal gate. The enclosure has a means for securing it in intimate contact with a skin surface. A chemically activatable substance is enclosed within one or more of the compartments and an activator is enclosed under pressure within one or more further compartments. A thermal sensor is positioned in contact, or near contact, with the skin surface, and a means for opening the portal gate, in accordance with a set point temperature and the actual temperature of the skin surface, is provided. Upon opening the portal gate, the activator is driven into contact with the chemically activatable substance thereby producing a chemical reaction causing a thermal exchange between the enclosure and the skin surface so as to cool or heat it.
Staple Fasteners With Color And Other Indicia Features And Use Thereof
A staple fastener comprises an elongate wire having a generally uniform cross section, and is bent to form a U-shape having a pair of linear spaced apart parallel leg portions depending from a common linear backbone portion. The staple fastener has an outer surface colored using a chemical surface treatment such as a chromate conversion coating. The staple fastener binds a document of the same color for hiding the fastener, or of a contrasting color for coding the document for improved filing efficiency and the color may carry significance in other respects, such as blue for the Engineering Department, green for the Marketing Department, red for the Manufacturing Department, and white for Management. The fastener may be multicolor when such would have significance, i.e., red, white and blue. The fastener may also carry an indicia which may be a code, such as a name or number or the like for improved disposition of the document and for filing. Such indicia may relate to filing location, routing or destination identification.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for assuring that a machine operator is not under the influence of a chemical, comprising a first sensor positioned proximally to the machine operator and adapted for measuring a vapor concentration proximal thereto, a second sensor positioned distally from the machine operator and adapted for measuring the vapor concentration distally from the operator, a device for comparing the proximal and distal vapor concentrations, and an automated remediating device responsive to the comparing device when the ratio of the first and the second vapor concentrations are within a specified range.
Steering Wheel Vapor Collection And Sensing System Using Suction
A gas manifold is configured for encircling a steering wheel, and formed, in cross-section, as a crescent shape having an exterior concave panel conforming to the shape of the steering wheel for nesting therearound, and an exterior convex panel joined with the concave panel to form a hollow space between the panels. The convex panel provides plural first through-apertures for admitting vapors into the hollow space within the gas manifold. An internal vapor sensing circuit is mounted within the hollow space for contact with the vapors. A tubular conductor is in vapor-flow communication with the manifold for drawing the vapors by suction, through the manifold via the first through-apertures. Electrical conductors join the internal vapor sensing circuit with an external control circuit for electrical signal communication, establishing control of an ignition circuit of the motor vehicle.
Steering Wheel Vapor Collection And Sensing System Using A Chemical Element
A vapor sensitive material is configured for encircling a steering wheel. The material is held within a flexible cover over the steering wheel or is bonded directly to the steering wheel or is held against the steering wheel by the cover, or is placed within a groove in the steering wheel. The material forms one element of an electrical sensory circuit able of detecting ethyl alcohol vapor partial pressures in the breath or sweat of the hands of a person holding the steering wheel.

Batteries to store solar energy could presage independence from utilities
EGen founder Landon Duval believes his system would be a perfect complement to Tesla: install Tesla's batteries in the box, and let EGen's brain manage them. But Tesla may be announcing a full system, Duval said.
