Abstract:
A sensor assembly including a sensor mounted on the piston and a transmitter mounted on either the piston or cylinder. Preferably the transmitter includes a wheel which engages the wall of the cylinder so as to rotate as the piston reciprocates within the cylinder. The wheel includes one or more magnets which emit a magnetic field that is received by the sensor as the wheel rotates whereby the sensor provides a signal indicative of the rotation of the wheel. The sensor then sends the signal to a logic component which determines the direction, travel and position of the piston within the cylinder.
A casing joint locator device and methods of use are described. The locator device includes a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor that is capable of detecting joints between sections of casing in a wellbore. The methods and devices described detect perturbations in the earths magnetic field caused by air gaps and discontinuities associated with a casing joint or with an external casing joint collar. As a result, they are capable of detecting flush and standard collared joints. The casing joint locator generates essentially no magnetic or electromagnetic field so that other downhole instrumentation is not affected by its presence.
A detector assembly and methods including a magnetoresistive sensor capable of detecting anomalies in the wall of a casing string disposed in a wellbore. Examples of anomalies include gaps between casings such as due to casing joints, air gaps in casing threads such as due to flush casing joints, enlarged casing wall thickness such as due to external casing collars, damaged casing, perforations, and other discontinuities or deformities in the casing. The detector assembly and methods detect perturbations in the earths magnetic field caused by the anomalies. The detector assembly generates essentially no magnetic or electromagnetic field so that other downhole instrumentation is not affected by its presence.

Abstract:
An apparatus for generating acoustic waves, the apparatus having: a support structure; two tines extending from the support structure so that proximal ends of the two tines are attached to the support structure so that distal ends of the two tines are positioned with standoffs relative to a dimension of the support structure and the distal ends of the two tines are uninhibited, wherein the two tines each comprise a moment arm; and an oscillator in mechanical communication with the two tines.

Abstract:
An example apparatus for generating acoustic waves is disclosed. The example apparatus includes a housing, and at least one plate having a moment arm, wherein each plate couples to the housing. The example apparatus for generating acoustic also includes at least one axial driver coupled to each moment arm, wherein each axial driver aligns with a longitudinal axis of the housing.

Abstract:
A system and method is provided for using acoustical pulses generated from an airborne laser source to locate objects under water. An array of acoustic sensors, such as passive sonobuoys at the ocean surface, is deployed in known or determinable locations by aircraft. Each area surrounded by acoustic sensors comprises a search cell, within which sonar scattering data can be used to locate objects. Following sonobuoy deployment, the aircraft uses the laser to rapidly generate many laser-acoustic pulse sources within each search cell, which in turn generate spherical acoustic pulses traveling through the water. The acoustic sensors receive the acoustic pulses, either on a direct path or on a scattered path after the pulse strikes an underwater object. The sensors record the acoustic signatures of the received pulses and transmit data of the recorded acoustic pulses to a processor such as processor on a nearby ship. The processor transforms the data of the acoustic signatures, together with data of the known locations of the acoustic sensors and the locations of the laser-acoustic pulse sources, into data of a location of the underwater objects.
