Abstract:

An adjustable collet mechanism for a surgical handpiece which enables the surgical tool driven by the handpiece to be oriented at selected angular positions relative to the handpiece axis. The coupling means includes a non-rotatable sleeve attached to the handpiece and a rotatable sleeve attached to the collet holding the surgical tool. The abutting faces of the non-rotatable and rotatable sleeves are angled relative to the handpiece axis so that relative rotation of the components causes their axes to be positionable either in alignment or at a predetermined angular orientation. The coupling mechanism includes a tubular coupling link which enables relative rotation between the rotatable and non-rotatable sleeves while also enabling translation of power from the handpiece to the surgical tool.

Abstract:

A surgical cutting instrument having an elongated rotatable inner member provided with a cutting edge at its distal tip, the inner member adapted to rotate within an elongated outer tube having a window adjacent its distal end adapted to cooperate with the cutting edge of the inner member. The outer tube is provided with a portion thereof adjacent its distal end which enables the distal tip of the outer tube to be bent at an angle relative to the proximal portion of the outer tube. The outer tube may be bent by a user into a selected angular position with the aid of a tool calibrated in a plurality of discrete positions. The tool is adapted to enable the outer tube to be rotated to any selected position prior to being bent so that the window at the distal tip of the outer tube may be caused to face in any desired direction relative to the bend in the outer tube.

Abstract:

A tow bar coupling head removably attachable to the cross pin of an aircraft nose wheel strut has a solid metal body portion with a transverse slot in its underside within which the cross pin is received. A positive deadbolt slide lock retains the cross pin in place. A removable locking pin extending vertically through the body portion prevents accidental withdrawal of the deadbolt slide lock.

Abstract:

A saw blade has two portions that are adjustable relative to one another in order to vary the overall length of the saw blade. A hub portion includes a hub adapted to engage a saw. Opposite the hub is an engagement end. A blade portion carries cutting teeth. Opposite the teeth is an engagement end. The engagement end of the blade portion engages the engagement end of the hub portion. The engagement ends carry a releasable lock to hold them in engagement to form a saw blade of a particular length. To change the saw blade length, the lock is released, the engagement ends moved relative to one another, and the lock reengaged. A locking sleeve can be slid to enclose the engagement portions to more securely hold them in engagement.

Abstract:

A tubing cassette and method for use in cooling a surgical handpiece. The handpiece is provided with a drive motor which is received within a cooling chamber adapted to circulate cooling fluid around the motor. The cooling chamber is accessible from the exterior of the handpiece via inflow and outflow apertures, and a disposable cassette is selectively attachable to the exterior of the handpiece so as to communicate inflow and outflow apertures of the cassette with the inflow and outflow apertures on the handpiece body. The cassette is provided with inflow and outflow ports in communication with its inflow and outflow apertures in order to direct cooling fluid into and out of the cooling chamber via tubes through which coolant fluid may be circulated with the aid of an external pump, if desired.

Abstract:

A shaver blade assembly useable in either an irrigation-only mode, an aspiration-only mode or an irrigation/aspiration mode. The shaver blade assembly has a stationary elongated outer tube and a movable (e. g. rotatable) elongated inner tube, both inner and outer tubes having hubs attached to their proximal ends for attachment to a handpiece which provides power to move the inner blade relative to the outer blade. The inner and outer tubes are provided with cutting windows at their distal tips and the relative movement between these cutting windows acts to cut tissue during surgical procedures. The outer tube is provided with a fluid inlet port at the proximal end of its tubular surface and a fluid adapter is selectively attachable to the outer tube so as to provide a means for introducing irrigating fluid into the fluid port. The adapter is integrally formed with sealing surfaces which obviate the need for O-rings and the like. A longitudinally extending irrigating channel is provided between the inlet fluid port at one end of the irrigating channel and the outlet fluid port at the distal end of the irrigating channel by which fluid is communicated to the vicinity of the cutting windows when the shaver blade is used in the irrigation-only mode or the irrigation/ aspiration mode.
