Abstract:

In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of obtaining a listing of information from a database and utilizing the listing as a user input to a machine in data communication with the database. A database is provided, and such database has a plurality of objects stored therein. A machine is utilized to form a machine-readable code on a substrate. The machine-readable code describes the location of a set of objects in the database. The machine-readable code is read with a reading machine configured to access the database and extract the set of objects from the database. The extracted set of objects is outputted as a listing on a substrate. The substrate having the listing thereon is provided to a user. The user marks at least some of the objects on the listing. After at least some of the objects are marked, the listing is scanned with a scanning machine configured to recognize the objects and to distinguish marked objects from unmarked objects.

Abstract:

A hearing aid includes an image sensing device, a sound input transducer, a sound output transducer, and a processor. The image sensing device detects an image from a selected region of a user of the hearing aid while the sound input transducer receives sound and produces an audio signal representative of the sound. The sound output transducer receives the audio signal and converts the audio signal to a sound wave that is provided to the user. The processor receives the image, analyzes the image to determine an existence of human-generated sound, and provides the audio signal from the sound input transducer to the sound output transducer when human-generated sound is detected. The audio signal is provided at a first level when human-generated sound is detected and is provided at a second level in an absence of human-generated sound.

Abstract:

The present invention is directed to enhancing a users interaction with a physical document, such as a page of a book, by supplying the user with additional information related to the physical document in a simple, easy to use fashion. Exemplary embodiments provide this additional information as digital content that is displayed as an overlay upon the document. The overlay can be in the form of a flat digital display that can be moved about a surface of the physical document. The absolute position of the movable display is tracked, so that digital content presented on the display is related to a particular position of the display over the document. This capability can be exploited to, for example, provide an on-the-fly translation of a particular document, with the translation being provided as the movable display is scanned over the words printed on a document to be translated.

Abstract:

In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of information storage and retrieval. A first communication is stored as data in a database with an identifier code. At least a portion of the data corresponding to the first communication is sent to a printer which prints a portion of the first communication together with the identifier code on a substrate. The first communication printed on the substrate is changed to form a second communication which is different from the first communication. The second communication is scanned with a scanning machine which digitizes the second communication and also digitizes the identifier code that had been printed on the substrate. Information is extracted from the digitized identifier code with a processor. The processor is in data communication with the database and is configured to utilize the extracted information to retrieve the first communication from the database. The digitized second communication is compared with the data of the first communication to identify differences between the second communication and the first communication.

Abstract:

A method for authenticating a document in which a document key for the document is generated by examining one or more attributes of a physical media that underlies the document. An original image is then imparted onto the physical media so that the original image is associated with the document key in a way that enables a subsequent recovery of the document key from the original image. This tying together of the underlying physical media, through the document key, with an original image enables detection of a forgery which was performed either through an alteration of the original image, or ink stripping and re-printing, or a printing of the original image on another physical media.

Abstract:

A messaging system that reduces communications bandwidth is disclosed. Difference messages are constructed at a sender from a message and prior state information. The difference messages include information describing the difference between the content of the message and a portion of prior state information, such as a prior message. The difference messages, including a prior message identifier, are sent to the receiver in place of the message. The message is reconstructed at the receiver using the corresponding difference message and the prior state information stored at the receiver. If the message reconstruction is unsuccessful, the sender is notified, and further required information is sent to the receiver.
