Abstract:
A system, architecture for initializing and utilizing a mirrored Network Attached Storage (NAS) system is described. The architecture includes a plurality of processing layers that define and control the operation and relationship of component groups in a primary NAS and associated component groups in a secondary NAS. The groups may include, for example, file server groups and disk device groups. The processing layers may include an execution layer, a transaction layer and a storage layer. The modularized architecture of the invention allows NAS systems to be easily apportioned into logical groups at varying levels of granularity with varying relationships. As a result, the component groups are abstracted from their underlying physical characteristics and constraints, thereby enabling complex processes such as initialization, activation and restoration to be performed using simple commands at a command line interface.

Abstract:
In an asynchronous remote copy system, a primary site keeps a list of data blocks for which changes have been made to a primary file system and transmitted to a secondary file system at a secondary site. When the primary site becomes inoperative, the secondary site begins read/write access to the secondary file system and keeps a snapshot copy of the restart point. Once the primary site becomes operative, the primary file system is restored to the state of the secondary file system at the restart point by using the list of data blocks for obtaining from the snapshot copy the data of the blocks for which changes had been made to the primary file system after the restart point. Then the primary file system is synchronized to the secondary file system, and read/write access is switched back from the secondary file system to the primary file system.

Abstract:
Methods and systems for backing up and restoring different point in time versions of a virtual machine, a real machine, an application, a database, or a set of electronic files using a plurality of independently managed snapshot chains are described. The different point in time versions of the data being backed-up may be stored using two or more snapshot chains corresponding with two or more data partitions of the data being backed-up. Over time, additional full image snapshots may be acquired from an external server or generated locally by a storage appliance to limit the snapshot chain lengths and to limit the aggregate block chain lengths for the snapshot chains. Acquisition and generation of the additional full image snapshots may be staggered across different data partitions to limit computational and storage costs per snapshot.

Abstract:
A data management and storage (DMS) cluster of peer DMS nodes manages data of a compute infrastructure by generating snapshots of partitions of a fileset of the compute infrastructure and providing a passthrough for storing the snapshots in a data storage separate from the DMS cluster, such as a cloud computing system. In one approach, the DMS nodes determine partitions of a fileset using fileset metadata, generates snapshots of the partititons, and stores the snapshots in the data storage. Each DMS node may include a local storage which is used to facilitate creation of a snapshot of a partition. The snapshot may be removed from the local storage after being sent to the data storage. Rather than storing the snapshot, the DMS cluster stores fileset metadata that is referenced to retrieve the snapshot from the data storage. The snapshot is deployed to retrieve a file stored in the partition.
