    Velocity information can be beneficial to various entities including other vehicles and a central traffic monitoring and routing system. Vehicles with sensors can serve as velocity probes to update speeds that are shared via a more global service. However, individuals may be reluctant to provide location and velocity information given privacy preferences. Local policies about sharing personal data are described that can be harnessed to enhance privacy while minimizing communication costs. The local data-sharing policies allow devices to monitor their own speeds and locations and to employ models and analyses that determine the value of sharing flow information with a larger service in accordance with privacy preferences, and to make local decisions as to when to respond to broadcasted queries for specific information, while minimizing the redundancy of signals from multiple vehicles.

    Described is a technology in which Bluetooth devices, e. g. , navigation devices, are enhanced with additional power amplification to allow long range radio communication links between moving vehicles and/or between moving vehicles and roadside hubs. In one example, collection and dissemination of traffic information, including aggregation and filtering, is facilitated via a Bluetooth vehicle-to-vehicle and/or vehicle-to-roadside hub ad-hoc network. Also described is efficient connection establishment and data transfer for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside hubs via the enhanced Bluetooth radio. The ad-hoc network comprising a mesh of vehicles/a supernode also facilitates the exchange of information that originated at an Internet source.

    Embodiments enable automatic and immediate sharing of reduced resolution versions of content captured by a user computing device and subsequent replacement of the reduced resolution versions with full resolution versions based on network connectivity. The user computing device captures image data in full resolution. A reduced resolution version is automatically created and uploaded to a storage service. The storage service provides the reduced resolution version to computing devices associated with the user computing device. Subsequently, based on network connectivity characteristics of a network connection between the user computing device and the storage service, the user computing device transmits the full resolution version of the image data to the storage service. The storage service replaces the reduced resolution version stored by the computing devices with the full resolution version. In some embodiments, the reduced resolution version is transmitted over a cellular network and the full resolution version is transmitted over Wi-Fi.

    The subject disclosure is directed towards a technology in which a mobile device such as a phone automatically changes its lock wallpaper content (e.g., an image or video) that appears when the device is in its lock state. An API or the like allows information to be received from an application or service according to which the content is changed, including obtaining the content as needed. The lock wallpaper content may change in response to an automatic change event, and may correspond to a current device context. For example, lock wallpaper content may be displayed based upon a currently playing podcast, audio track, or currently running application program or service. The lock wallpaper may change among content obtained from a social networking site, or from a favorites store. The device may allow gesturing to change the content.
