Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing points of zero intensity, i. e. speckle pattern, emerging from a multimode fiber. The apparatus comprises a beam deflector for rotating an input beam in a conical shape around a launch lens for projecting the beam into the fiber. The rotation of the beam further incorporates the use of two tilting mirrors being 90Â out of phase to ensure a conical rotation. The conical rotation of the beam deflector ensures that the lens aberrations, which are rotationally symmetric, do not play a factor in beam alignment into the fiber aperture.

Abstract:
An acoustic transducer system for use in the measurement of longitudinal sound velocity in a cement sample that is maintained at high temperature and pressure. The acoustic assembly is separate from the end plugs to optimize acoustic coupling between the individual elements of the assembly, to increase the amplitude and consistency of the acoustic signal and to provide an ability to replace the transducers as a separate assembly. The transducer includes an acoustic transmission line and utilizes a pressure isolation method to optimize the material and the manufacturing process to enhance the acoustic signal required for the measurement. The transducer assembly includes a high temperature piezoelectric ceramic and a load mass that improve the signal amplitude and provide the required electrical connections. The transducer improves the ability to measure the longitudinal wave velocity in a cement sample at elevated temperature and pressure for determining the sample's compressive strength.

Abstract:
A reflective Bragg grating in the interior of an infrared transmitting glass fiber, and a method for fabricating such reflective Bragg grating in the interior of the infrared transmitting glass fiber is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: producing first and second writing beams at the same wavelength; orienting the first and second writing beams in parallel with respect to each other; crossing the first and second writing beams at a preselected angle with respect to each other to form an interference pattern at the intersection of the first and second writing beams; positioning the infrared transmitting glass fiber at the intersection of the first and second writing beams so that the interference pattern occurs along a portion of the length of the infrared transmitting glass fiber; and maintaining the infrared transmitting glass fiber at the intersection of the first and second writing beams for a time sufficient to produce a Bragg grating in the core and cladding of the infrared transmitting glass fiber.

Abstract:
A selenide glass with improved mechanical and optical properties such as ended transmission in the infrared region of radiation having wavelengths beyond 15 microns; Tg in the region of 363. degree. -394. degree. C. ; and thermal stability of 85. degree. -145. degree. C. based on the difference between T. sub. g and T. sub. x, comprising, on mol basis, 20-70% germanium selenide, 0. 5-25% gallium selenide, indium selenide or mixtures thereof; and 5-50% of at least one alkaline earth in selenide form is described. A process for improving mechanical and optical properties of a selenide glass based on germanium selenide comprises the steps of mixing glass components, including a modifier in elemental or selenide form; melting the glass components to form a molten mixture; cooling the molten glass mixture to a solid state; annealing the solid glass; and cooling the annealed glass to about room temperature is also described. The glass components can be in elemental form or in the form of selenides, and if in elemental form, then sufficient amount of selenium is added to form selenides of the glass components.
