Abstract:

A mechanism to acquire and deploy (“bootstrap”) software files, particularly testcase files, across multiple hosts and platforms is provided. A software package is created and a predetermined bootstrap executable file is built into the package. A process on each host on which the software files are to be deployed extracts the bootstrap file and executes it. Each bootstrap executable builds corresponding software files into the software package. The process then extracts the files corresponding to its particular process from the software package.

Abstract:

A mechanism for sharing files, and sets of related files, or packages of files, in a multi-host, multi-platform environment is provided. A public package client handles user requests to perform operations on a software package. Additionally, information about the package and the files contained therein may be obtained. A server, responsive to the client, performs the operations on the package. Data about the files is set in a data structure which may be stored in an archive along with the files themselves. In particular, this data may identify each file as either a text or binary file and as an executable file. A client may access the aforementioned data to determine if the file or files require further processing to adapt the file to the operating system on the client. Such processing may, for example, include linefeed/carriage return translation and codepage translation, or setting file attributes.

Abstract:

A data processor controlled user interactive display system for displaying hypertext documents, each including a sequence of display screen pages received over a communications network such as the World Wide Web. In order to reduce downloading time, Web pages are transmitted as HTML files in which images are represented by identifiers. The images corresponding to the identifiers may be fetched from libraries of universal images. The invention is implemented by the display stations which receive the Web pages. These stations, through associated browsers, retrieve the universal image libraries via the internet and download such libraries once and store them locally on caches associated with the browsers.

Systems and methods for software automation are provided. Software testcases are distributed across multiple data processing systems (equivalently, “machines” or “hosts”) that may collectively include multiple platforms (equivalently, “operating systems”). A testcase may be executed as one or more processes progressing through a sequence of phases, with execution within a phase being asynchronous among processes. Synchronization of the testcase processes across the data processing systems and platforms may be effected by managing an event; the testcase processes block on the event upon completion of the current testcase phase. A testcase phase execution service on each host handles synchronization events. The definition of the testcase may include metadata that identifies the particular phases in sequence, that is phase names, for the testcase; the phase names identifies the phases to the synchronization process that triggers the synchronization events which initiate each succeeding phase of the testcase.

A mechanism to build public file packages across multiple hosts and platforms is provided. A file package is created and builder processes (or simply “builders”) distributed among the hosts build a file set into the package. The builder may be represented by an executable file deployed on the host that may be, but is not necessarily, the target of the file set. A set of builders may be associated with a particular file package and invalid builders may be precluded from “working” on the package. A build event may be associated with the build and triggered when all builders have completed their respective builds.

Abstract:

A remote monitoring and alerting system includes one or more remote terminal units and a central system, with both the central system and each remote terminal unit adapted to send and receive data across a communications network. Each remote terminal unit includes a processor and wireless transmitter in a compact arrangement that allows the unit to be placed conveniently in a housing associated with some remote device to be monitored. The central system includes a data collection and manipulation controller for receiving, processing, and storing data received from each remote terminal unit across the communications network. Both a user messaging controller and a user interface controller are also included in the central system. The user messaging controller transmits user messages through a suitable interface to one or more user designated devices in response to a remote terminal unit message received from the remote terminal unit. The user interface controller provides a user interface between a user of the remote monitoring and alerting system and the central system.
