A surround for supporting a diaphragm used to create acoustic waves includes a rib section extending away from the diaphragm and a membrane section that is supported by the rib section. The membrane section has a thickness in a direction substantially normal to opposing top and bottom surfaces of the membrane section which is substantially thinner than a thickness of the rib section in a direction substantially normal to opposing top and bottom surfaces of the rib section. A restoring force returning the diaphragm to a home position is contributed to more due to deformation of the rib section than to deformation of the membrane section.
A surround for a diaphragm includes at least one rib section oriented to be extended during excursions of the diaphragm. The surround includes at least one membrane section supported by one or more rib sections contributing to a compliance characteristic different from the contribution of the one or more rib sections.
An electroacoustical transducer includes a bobbin, a first acoustic radiator coupled to the bobbin through a first surround having a mechanical compliance, a second acoustic radiator generally rigidly coupled to the bobbin, and a basket. The first acoustic radiator is coupled to the basket through a second surround, and the second acoustic radiator is coupled to the basket through a third surround. The first surround is constructed to cause the first acoustic radiator to move out of phase with the second acoustic radiator relative to the bobbin when actuated by the bobbin at acoustic frequencies at and above a resonant frequency of the first acoustic radiator.

Abstract:
A three dimensional acoustic passive radiator diaphragm. A diaphragm a three dimensional volume. An acoustic driver radiates pressure waves into the three dimensional volume to cause the diaphragm to expand and contract. The three dimensional passive radiator may include a core of a porous, compressible material.
A suspension element for mechanically coupling an acoustic diaphragm to a stationary element. The suspension element is characterized by a total compliance. The total compliance includes a shear compliance and a beam compliance. The beam compliance is not significantly larger than the shear compliance.

Abstract:
In an aspect, in general, a loudspeaker element includes an enclosure, a cone diaphragm of a driver element located within the enclosure, a first cavity wall extending from the cone diaphragm of the driver element to a throat opening which has an area less than an area of the cone diaphragm and forming a first cavity within the enclosure, an exit element extending from the throat opening to an environment outside of the enclosure, and an impedance compensation element extending from the first cavity wall, the impedance compensation element including a second cavity wall which forms a second cavity within the enclosure and a resistance element separating the second cavity from the first cavity.

Abstract:
A speaker includes a housing and four substantially similar electro-acoustic drivers secured inside the housing. The drivers are driven by substantially the same audio signal and are arranged such that the net mechanical vibrational force between the drivers and the housing is substantially zero. Four substantially similar passive radiators are secured inside the housing and driven by acoustic energy from the four drivers. The passive radiators are arranged such that the net mechanical vibrational force between the passive radiators and the housing is substantially zero.
