Abstract:

The invention relates to a method for detecting an acid or base in an environment, measuring the concentration of an acid or base in an environment, or measuring the pH of an environment, by contacting the environment containing the acid or the base with a sensor, wherein the sensor is composed of an index of refraction transducer having an outer surface; at least one compound having at least one functional group of a Lewis acid, a Lewis base, a Bronsted acid, a Bronsted base, or a combination thereof, wherein the compound is on or near the outer surface of the transducer, wherein the functional group can interact with the acid or base in the environment to induce a change in index of refraction on or near the outer surface of the transducer, with the provisos that (i) the compound does not undergo a color change when contacted with the acid or base, and (ii) when there are naturally occurring functional groups, no transducer attached compounds, and exactly one overlayer, then the overlayer is not poly(vinyl alcohol); a means for detecting or measuring the change of index of refraction, and a means for converting the change of index of refraction to a signal that corresponds to the detection of the acid or base in the environment, the concentration of the acid or base in the environment, or the pH of the environment, measuring the change of index of refraction, and converting the change of index of refraction to a signal that corresponds to the detection of the acid or base in the environment, the concentration of the acid or base in the environment, or the pH of the environment. The invention further relates to the sensors thereof.

Disclosed are emulsifiers useful in food products such as cakes, icings, cream fillings, whipped toppings, etc. The emulsifiers comprise a blend of monoglycerides, propylene glycol monoesters and an alkali metal salt of a fatty acid. The emulsifiers are essentially totally active and do not require the use of a carrier.

Abstract:

A packing material for formation of a seal for a rotary or reciprocating shaft is disclosed wherein a core element is enveloped by a sheet of expanded graphite material. The core element is preferably formed of a wire mesh and solid graphite. The enveloping process is accomplished in such a manner as to wrap the core element with a self-lubricating surface material. The packing material of the present invention provides the advantages of graphite packings and metallic core packings.

Abstract:

Disclosed are dry powdered emulsifiers suitable for use in dough from which bakery products are made. The powdered emulsifiers are solid solutions comprising (1) saturated monoesters, or mixtures of saturated monoesters and succinylated monoglycerides and (2) unsaturated monoesters. The monoesters are prepared from fatty acids and either glycerine or propylene glycol, and are saturated to an extent so as to have an iodine value within the range of about 5 to about 33, and a melting point of at least about 50. degree. C. The powder has sufficient wettability to form a particulate dispersion in water at 25. degree. C. under mild agitation.

Abstract:

Composition adapted for use as a starch complexing additive in potatoes and alimentary pasta products is described. The composition comprises a blend of about 25 to about 95% saturated monoglycerides prepared from vegetable oil and about 75 to 5% unsaturated monoglycerides prepared from vegetable oil. The composition is readily dispersible in the food product and overcomes problems such as stickiness in the cooked food.

Abstract:

this invention concerns novel curing systems useful for curing unsaturated polyester/monomer mixtures such as the polyester of propylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride, with styrene as the monomer. The curing system is the complex formed by the reaction of (1) a cobalt compound, such as Co(OH). sub. 2 or CoCO. sub. 3 (2) and acid of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is a straight or branched alkyl of 1-20 carbons which may be monosubstituted with hydroxyl, aryl of 6-10 ring carbons and cycloaliphatic of 6-10 ring carbons, and (3) a nitrogen component of the formula ##STR2## wherein R and R' are independently selected from straight and branched alkyl of 1-10 carbon atoms which may be monosubstituted with hydroxyl. The acid residue in the complex comprises from about 0. 2 to about 20.
