after returning the snack cake to grocery stores, Hostess Brands admits that business is soft. Now, the company is closing one of its four bakeries left in the country. The bakery on the chopping block is in Schiller Park, Illinois, where Twinkies were invented in 1930 by bakery manager James Dewar.
Sughayer, his brother, Hani, and Andres DeLeon, marketing director for the restaurants, were among a group of special guests including family members of Twinkie inventor James Dewar invited to Hostess Brands Schiller Park bakery in what the company dubbed the sweetest comeback in the history
some kind of spell that enables it to survive a whole foods revolution, a diet-foods craze, and two large-scale economic meltdowns. Born in the 1930s, Twinkie creator James Dewar was simply looking for a use for poundcake that would appeal to frugal shoppers once fresh strawberries were out of season.
Part of it is clearly the name. Ettlinger says the creator of Twinkies, James Dewar, couldn't decide what to call them until he was driving to the meeting to introduce the product and saw a sign advertising "Twinkle Toe Shoes." And a brand was born.
James Dewar was experimenting with ideas on how to put unused shortcake pans to work. Since strawberries were out of season, Dewar decided to fill them with a creamy banana-flavored filling instead. Thus, the first Twinkies were created. Watch the ad here.

Twinkie supply could be disrupted if Hostess liquidates
A predecessor company, Continental Baking Co., was a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Ralston Purina Co. from 1984 to 1995. And, James Dewar, a Hostess plant manager in suburban Chicago who invented Twinkies in 1930, came up with its name after seeing a St. Louis billboard for Twinkle Toe shoes.
Among the 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers Hostess said it will close is a factory in Schiller Park, Ill., which neighbors Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The bakery was the birthplace of the Twinkie, created on April 6, 1939 by Continental Baking Co.'s James Dewar.
Plant manager James Dewar came up with the recipe in his quest to create a two-for-a-nickel snack. He reportedly arrived at the name after passing a billboard for Twinkle Toe Shoes, distilling it for his concoction to Twinkie.
