Abstract:

The described invention includes method and apparatus for the installation of a casing hanger supporting a string of casing down hole in an oil or gas well, for removal of the installation equipment, and for tying back the hanger to an insulated production riser extending to the surface. The casing hanger is lowered into the well on drilling casing, having a smaller outside diameter than the insulated production riser casing, to permit a sufficiently large annulus for the passage of fluid between the drilling riser and the previously installed drilling riser. The drilling riser is removed by disconnecting it from the hanger by clockwise rotation of the drilling riser. The insulated production riser casing, or other special riser pipe, having a larger outside diameter than the drilling riser casing, is used to tie back with the hanger where standard riser casing is not suitable for the production of oil or gas, e. g. in the case of production through permafrost, by a clockwise rotation of the drilling riser. Clockwise rotation is used both to disconnect the drilling riser and to connect the production riser.

Abstract:

A vertical string of pipe such as is used in an offshore piling comprising a plurality of pipe joints connected together by connector means, each connector means comprising a breech block type connection with a latch to hold the connector means in engagement, one of the connector means latches being remotely disengageable by means of a releasing tool lowered down through the string of pipe, the one latch including a bar extending radially through the wall of the connector means to engage the latch, the bar being movable radially outwardly upon being engaged by the releasing tool so as to either break off a portion of the latch or move the latch out of engagement.

Abstract:

A reciprocating gate valve having an adjustable low stress stem connection structure (70) for connecting an operating stem (42) to a gate member (24). The connection structure includes a stem extension (78) formed on the bottom end of the operating stem (42) threadably receiving a collar (84) having an axial bore (86) coaxial with the stem (42) and extending therethrough receiving a gate extension (72) formed on the top end of the gate member (24). The collar (84) has a slot (96) extending generally perpendicular to the axial bore (86) in the direction of fluid flow through the valve. An adjusting nut (106) fits into the slot (96) and threadably engages the gate extension (72). The slot (96) permits movement of the nut (106) and gate member (24) relative to the longitudinal axis of the stem (42) in a direction generally parallel to the direction of fluid flow through to the gate valve. The nut (106) is accessible from the slot (96) for manual axial adjustment of the gate member (24) relative to the stem (42) so that the gate member port (30) can be aligned with the flow passages. The stem extension (78) has an annular shoulder (116) to provide a metal-to-metal seal with the bonnet (36) in the closed position of the gate valve.

Abstract:

A multiple tubing hanger tie back arrangement is disclosed in a preferred embodiment associated with a shear ram tubing head system (10). The arrangement includes a lower tubing hanger (44) sealingly secured within a lower tubing head (28) for supporting a tubing string (22). The lower hanger includes a control shoulder (60) at its upper end and a tapered interior surface (62). An upper tubing hanger (70) spaced above the lower hanger is also sealingly secured within an upper tubing head (24). A tie back subassembly (90) connects the upper and lower hangers, and preferably includes a tubing member (94) and a spacer member (92). The spacer member includes a stab nipple (96) in interference engagement with the lower hanger interior surface (62), and a load transfer surface (98) abuting the control shoulder (60). The tubing member (94) is located in the bore of the shear ram (26) so that severance of the tubing member (94) does not disturb the production tubing string (22) supported by the lower hanger (44). After severance, the tie back stub can be readily removed.
