Abstract:

A computer system is programmed with a scheduler for scheduling multi-point electronic conferences with a multi-point conferencing control service. The scheduler is equipped to automatically connect a user to a remote directory service for selection of some or all of the participants the user wants to be included in the multi-point electronic conference being scheduled. In the presently preferred embodiments, the user is connected to an independent directory service of the users choice, and the independent directory services available for selection are public directory services having names and connection addresses for a large number of persons.

A method includes receiving a stream of data in a computer for transmission from the computer. A determination is made whether a portion of the stream of data indicates personal information. A system and method for a secure cached subscription system is described. In one embodiment, the system comprises a content provider and a caching device connected to the content provider. The content provider speculatively downloads information into the caching device based upon a users data. A processing device is connected via a high-bandwidth connection to the caching device for processing the information.

Abstract:

A system transmits data, which includes a plurality of data types, over a plurality of communication paths. The system determines which of the plurality of communication paths are available for transmitting the data. The system then determines at least one desired quality of service characteristic for each of the data tapes. Finally, the system selects at least one of the available communication paths for transmitting each of the data types by matching the desired quality of service characteristics to the available communication paths.

An apparatus comprising a usage analysis engine may be capable of receiving data on the environment of the apparatus, the data used to create a profile. The usage analysis engine may be further capable of correlating a present profile with previous profiles. A computer security system and method. An event detector detects events occurring in a monitored computer system, such as processor events, input events, and output events. A permission category list lists permission categories for events that might occur in the monitored computer system, and a decision maker determines action to be taken in response to detection of the event, based on the permission category of the event. The event detector might include an event list listing events to be detected, and the decision maker might include an action list listing action to be taken in response to different permission categories. If an event is not on the permission category list, the decision maker prohibits performance of the event, or alternatively issues a prompt to the computer user to specify action to be taken.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for providing remote, distributed processing of a task by employing a wide area network (e. g. , the Internet). A resource provider initiates the process by sending an application to a resource allocator requesting to be added to the resource allocator's list of providers. The resource allocator accepts or rejects a particular resource provider based on the application. If accepted, the resource provider waits for a task from the resource allocator. Upon receiving a task, the resource provider evaluates the currently available local resources. The resource provider determines whether or not it is currently able to handle the task in view of the available local resources. If the resource provider is able to handle the task, it accepts the task. The resource provider processes the task and returns the results to either the resource allocator or the original resource requester.

Abstract:

A technique is provided for displaying a map of a portion of the World Wide Web. A number of Web documents are retrieved by a client computer system executing a search engine. Web documents are then represented on a display device as objects and the relevance of the Web documents to the search criteria is indicated by the apparent distance of the corresponding object to the user. Hypertext links between Web documents are represented as arrows between the objects. Additional information relating to Web sites, such as the popularity of a Web site, the length of a Web document, and the number of hypertext links in a Web document, are represented to the user visually using visual attributes of objects, such as color, shape, and texture.
