A fast curing radiation-curable composition useful as coating compositions for inner and outer primary coatings, inks, ribbons other matrix material coating layers for coating and surrounding optical fibers. The improved radiation-curable compositions, having a propoxylated monomer or oligomer component, demonstrate unexpectedly fast cure speeds while providing strong adhesion characteristics to a variety of substrates and can also be used as a general radiation-curable adhesive or can be adapted for use in the specialized process of digital versatile disk (DVD) production.

Abstract:

Provided is a radiation-curable, inner primary coating composition adapted for forming inner primary coatings on optical glass fibers. The coating composition is formulated from a composition having: at least one radiation-curable oligomer having a number average molecular weight of at least 2000 containing: a polyester backbone; a plurality of carbon-containing side-chains each having from about 3 to about 30 carbon atoms and being connected to the polyester backbone, wherein the carbon-containing side-chains comprise at least about 5% of the number average molecular weight of the oligomer; and at least one radiation-curable functional group bound to the polyester backbone, wherein the oligomer is present in an amount sufficient to provide an inner primary coating formed from the coating composition with the functional capability of releasing from a surface of an optical glass fiber as a coherent layer; and optionally at least one diluent monomer in an amount to provide the coating composition with a viscosity suitable for application to optical glass fibers.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a radiation curable coating composition comprising (A) a compound according to P-(D-(meth)acrylate)having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of at least 500 kg/kmol, wherein n=240, P=oligomeric or polymeric backbone, and D comprises an urethane group and an heterocyclic group, said heterocyclic group having a Boltzmann average dipole moment of at least 2.5 Debye, and (B) a reactive diluent. The heteorocylic group is preferably an oxazolidone group. The invention further relates to a method for making a resin composition comprising a compound comprising an oxazolidone group and an (meth)acrylate group, said method comprising a reaction step introducing the (meth)acrylate group into the compound, wherein said reaction step is carried out in the presence of an antioxidant.

Abstract:

A method of coating a concrete floor is disclosed in which the concrete surface is coated with a homogeneous liquid coating composition containing maleate or fumarate unsaturation in combination with vinyl ether unsaturation and a ketonic photoinitiator, the wet coating is allowed to seep into the concrete surface and to flow out on the concrete surface to form a smooth coating, and this coating is cured by exposing it at light having a wavelength in the range of from about 200 to about 600 nanometers.

A cationically curable polyurethane composition comprises the reaction product of an organic polyisocyanate with a transvinylation polyhydric alcohol mixture containing hydroxy groups. Abstract:

An hydroxy-functional polyurethane reaction product is disclosed which enables the provision of thermosetting solution coating compositions which cure at low temperature to form flexible coatings. These polyurethanes are provided by the reaction of an organic diisocyanate with a stoichiometric excess of an essentially linear hydroxy-functional polyester which is the polyesterification reaction product of C. sub. 4 -C. sub. 10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof with a stoichiometric excess of C. sub. 3 -C. sub. 8 aliphatic diol providing an alcohol/acid molar ratio of 3/2 to 6/5. The reaction is substantially complete as indicated by an acid number less than 10, and the diisocyanate is used in an amount providing an NCO/OH ratio of from 2/3 to 12/13. The thermosetting solution coating composition is provided by an organic solvent having dissolved therein from 5-50% of total resin solids of a curing agent reactive with hydroxy groups together with the polyurethane which has been described. The preferred curing agent is a partially methylolated melamine which contains from about 5 mol percent to about 40 mol percent of the methylol group.
