Del. child poverty persists even as recession fades
George Sharpley, a state Labor Department economist, said the number of individuals unemployed but looking for work averaged 25,516 through the first six months of 2014. Thats a 41 percent increase from 2008, when the number was 18,780.
"The business survey side is showing job growth over the year, although there was a loss of 600 jobs reported from January to February, but that follow very strong growth in January, so overall jobs are up," says George Sharpley, the department's Chief of Labor Information.
"I do think we'll see a slight pickup for the end of the year, but I do think we're kind of stuck in a rut" until then, George Sharpley, senior economist with the Labor Department, said of job conditions.
The decline in construction jobs could be attributed to skilled trades workers completing their work to get the Delaware City refinery restarted and processing petroleum products again, said Department of Labor economist George Sharpley.
