Abstract:
In one embodiment of the present invention, a modular printing system has a plurality of modules for processing sheets. One module is a collator module configured to retain the sheets. The collator module has a collator controller and sensors linked to the collator controller. The sensors are arranged to detect erroneously processed sheets. The collator controller is configured to generate an error signal in response to detection of an error. The collator module also includes a feed assembly for presenting the sheets. A printer module is configured to receive sheets presented by the feed assembly. The printer module includes a printer controller and sensors linked to the printer controller. The sensors are arranged to detect erroneously processed sheets and to generate an error signal in response to detection of an error. The module printing system also includes a system controller linked to the collator controller and the printer controller.

Abstract:
A label affixer shoe, having an application blade with an edge, a first surface, and second surface, and a pivot. The shoe pivots between first and second orientations. The first surface, edge, said second surface separate a label from a liner when the label and liner are moved from the first surface of the shoe past the edge toward the second surface. The shoe may be incorporated into an affixer carriage, also including a pivot actuator. The shoe may be incorporated into an affixer module, with a translation actuator, a card feed mechanism, and a label feed mechanism. When the blade is in the first orientation, the shoe does not obstruct the feeding of the card to or from the label receiving position. The translation of the shoe from the first position to the second position while the blade is in the second orientation applies the label to the card.

Abstract:
A system and method for personalizing cards and other secure identification documents. The card personalizing system and method have improved data integrity, system reliability, and system performance. Improvements to card handling and processing within the modules, improved card transfer between modules, improvements to control of the modules, and other improvements are set forth, all of which contribute, individually and collectively, to achieving these goals.

Abstract:
A booklet processing mechanism is described that includes a booklet guide and clamp system that is configured to act as the guide during entry and exit of the booklet into and from the mechanism, as well as clamp and hold the booklet in its proper position during a processing operation, for example by a laser or during vision verification. The booklet guide and clamp system is moveable between a first position for guiding an upper, free edge of an opened booklet and a second position where the upper, free edge is clamped against a backing plate. At the second, clamping position, the mechanism is out of the way so that it does not interfere with the processing operation. Because the guiding and clamping functions are combined into one mechanism, only one actuator and one sensor are needed for the guiding and clamping functions.
