Abstract:
A fuse for operation with both DC and AC currents is disclosed which consists of a composite fuse link contained in a large insulator housing. Located within the housing are first and second foil sections fabricated from a good conducting material. Each foil section is secured to a right and left terminal with its other end coupled to a central link fabricated from zinc. The central link is contained within a smaller cylinder and is surrounded by air, while the foil sections are surrounded by quartz sand or some other suitable filler material dispersed within the large housing.

Abstract:
There is disclosed an encapsulated fuse link whereby a lower melting point metal such as tin is deposited between two reduced cross sectional areas of a higher melting point base material such as copper or silver which forms the major surface area of the link. The area upon which the lower melting point metal is deposited is encapsulated by means of nonconductive material such as a high temperature plastic tube which is secured to the major surface of the link by some means such as staples at either end. The structure prevents the low melting point metal from migrating or traveling down the fuse link during operation which would undesirably tend to alter the characteristics of the fuse.

Abstract:
An asymmetrical fuse link employs a planar conductive member with the top and bottom surfaces manifested by having a series of alternating partial apertures with the alternating apertures in the top surface being of a first larger area followed by a second smaller area followed by a next larger area and so on. The bottom surface of the link also having a plurality of alternating partial apertures with the smaller diameter aperture of the bottom surface aligned with a larger diameter aperture in the top surface and so on. Thus the top and bottom surfaces each have partial apertures, with one of which is of a larger area and the next of a smaller area and arranged along a common axis and separated by a central aperture. Based on the above construction of the link, an arc generated during current interruption of the fuse is caused to zig zag along opposite edges of the planar member from a first to a second end. The configuration allows one to employ less material in implementing a fuse link than employed with prior art configurations, and makes for an excellent very fast acting current limiting fuse without a high peak recovery voltage.

Abstract:
A fuse link for use in a fast acting current limiting fuse also exhibiting a superior arc quenching capability consisting of a thin copper ribbon placed in series with a thin silver ribbon. The copper section provides a faster heating capability to the fuse while the silver section assures a lower arcing capability. The copper section has a series of apertures along the surface thereof which apertures are semicircular in configuration at the top and bottom of the copper section and separated by a circular aperture in between located in the center of the link. The silver section has top and bottom trapezoidal apertures which are separated by a smaller diameter circular aperture at the center of the link. The copper and silver links are placed in series between fuse terminals and are connected by both a mechanical and electrical connection to afford a reliable bond between the dissimilar metals constituting each of the separate links.
