Abstract:

A navigation device displays major routes and direction indications without a specific destination requirement. Where several possible destinations are presented, the device displays information for a destination at or when nearing decision points for traveling to the destination. Direction indicators can be presented on top of an appropriately scaled map having routes displayed which are integral to the indicators and directions. A destination displayed may be selected to retrieve detailed driving instructions to that specific destination. In one embodiment, the navigation device displays direction indications to major destinations, entrances, exits, and other important facilities in a âhighway signâ fashion at major decision points.

Abstract:

An electronic map is stored as a collection of nodes and links. Roads in the map are assigned priorities for pathfinding purposes. A node's priority originally corresponds to the priority of the road associated with the node. Electronic maps can be made more useful by adding short cuts to the map. A short cut generator is disclosed that creates short cuts by building compound links and/or raising the priority of certain nodes. A compound link is a link that represents travel along multiple links of the electronic map.

Abstract:

A system and method for computing routing on a road network are described. One embodiment includes pre-processing routing data for one or more environmental profiles integrated into a hierarchy, dynamically adding links to the hierarchy in response to real-time data on traffic conditions, and cluster-routing to approximate routing travel costs based on realtime traffic data A further embodiment includes a) identifying one or more portions of a road network as being more preferable than normal based on real-time data, b) expressing the one or more portions of the road network as a sequence of locations comprising a uniquely identifiable path, c) using the sequence of locations comprising a uniquely identifiable path to add one or more links to an already constructed hierarchical network of roads, and d) enabling a pathfinding algorithm to adjust to the real-time data.

Abstract:

A system is disclosed for determining a path in a network that decreases the number of disk accesses needed during the pathfinding computation. The network is divided in to a set of tiles. Certain sub-paths are pre-computed. The pre-computed sub-paths are grouped into webs. When finding a path, the system will perform a pathfinding exploration within the tile for the origin and a pathfinding exploration within the tile for the destination. A number of the webs will be used with the two explorations to determine a path from the origin to the destination.
