Abstract:
An aqueous solution containing a water miscible organic solvent, polyethylene glycol and heparine, is used to modify the tissue reactivity of an autologous tissue freshly obtained from a host mammal and to render the tissue temporarily more rigid than in its native state, and better suited for shaping, molding, handling and cutting prior to implantation into the host patient. The implant is highly resistant or immune to thickening, contraction and reduced fibrin deposition after it is implanted and exposed to the bloodstream of the host.

Abstract:
A process for preparing pliable soft tissue specimen which are resistant to cracking and devoid of viable cells includes the steps of treating native soft tissue obtained from a donor by a gradually increasing gradient of aliphatic alcohol or other suitable water miscible polar organic solvent until the last alcohol (or other solvent) solution has at least 25% by volume of the organic liquid. Thereafter, the tissue specimen is treated with a solution containing glycerol or low molecular weight (1000 D) polyethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol of a molecular weight between approximately 6,000 to 15,000 D and heparin. Thereafter, the tissue specimen is briefly immersed in aqueous heparin solution, frozen and lyophilized. The tissue specimen is suitable for implantation as a homograft or xenograft, with or without rehydration.

A headphone having reduced tendency to tangle comprises an input portion for receiving electrical signals from an output device, an output portion for providing audio signals to a user in response to the electrical signals, a plurality of wires coupled to the input portion and the output portion for providing the electrical signals to the output portion, and a restraint mechanism coupled to the plurality of wires and cable of being repositioned along the plurality of wire, wherein the restraint mechanism is for physically receiving insertion of at least a portion of the input portion and for physically restraining movement of the portion of input portion with respect to output portion when the portion of the input portion is physically inserted into the restraint mechanism, wherein a temporary and removable closed loop of wire is formed from the plurality of wires, until a sufficient separation force is applied.

A process for removing ions of dissolved heavy metals and complex heavy metals comprises provides a treatment zone in which is contained an extraction material having an activated surface that has an affinity for heavy metal ions and complex heavy metal ions. The activated surface is the reaction product of a polyamine with a covalently anchored trifunctional hydrocarbyl silyl that yields non-crosslinked amino groups to which functional chelator groups can be covalently attached. The activated surface of the extraction material is formed by first hydrating the extraction material surface and then silanizing the hydrated surface with a short chain trifunctional silane having a hydrocarbon substituent containing 1-6 carbon atoms and a terminal leaving group, and then reacting a polyamine with the hydrocarbylsilyl from the silanization of the hydrated surface so as to form an aminohydrocarbyl polymer covalently bound to the extraction material surface.

A precision grip meter includes a frame; a base on the frame sized and shaped to engage the palm of the hand; a plurality of plungers on the frame opposite the base and located for being depressed by corresponding fingers of the hand; and a device associated with the base and the plungers for simultaneously measuring and recording both finger strength and overall hand strength. The grip meter may also comprise a frame; a force-detecting device; a first system on the frame for receiving the fingers of a hand and applying force exerted by the fingers to the force-detecting device; and a second system on the frame for receiving the heel of the hand and applying force exerted by the heel to the force-detecting device. Preferably, the grip meter is symmetrical so that it can be used for measuring the finger and hand strength of either the left hand or the right hand.
