Not all Coachella Valley High alumni feel a change is necessary. David Hinkle, who graduated from the school in 1961, defended the Arab mascot, which he called a matter of school pride. The "angry Arab" was introduced when he was a freshman.
After Sept. 11, some people wanted the name changed so that the district would not be associated with terrorists, said David Hinkle, a 1961 Coachella Valley High School graduate toAl Jazeera America.
David Hinkle, a 20-year-old freshman at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, said he heard the sirens and that he and a friend drove to see the funnel cloud, but they eventually steered into a highway ditch for cover.
