Abstract:

An exemplary magnetically-driven fluid pump includes a magnet housing (“cup”) that enables one or more sensors to be in indirect (“non-wetted”) contact with the pumped fluid while avoiding the static seals normally required with sensors that are mounted to a fluid conduit or chamber and extend into the fluid pathway. Sensors may be used for monitoring the fluid or for feedback control of the pump. By coupling sensors directly to electronic circuits that control the pump, the number of wires located outside the motor housing is minimized, making the assembly more rugged. This is particularly advantageous in hazardous environments or submerged applications. Pumps and hydraulic systems disclosed exhibit fewer leaks under more aggressive pumping conditions and while providing improved pump performance, compared to conventional pumps and systems.

Abstract:

A fluid pump having a pump housing that includes at least one expansion joint, provides volume compensation, as needed, to adjust for changes in pressure in the pump housing. Various embodiments automatically and passively reduce static pressure in the pump housing associated with a freezing event, thereby preventing damage to the pump head. Volume compensation is achieved by employing, in each expansion joint, a dynamic seal that allows relative movement of two portions of the pump housing, and a bias that provides a selected counter-force to the movement of the housing portions. The subject pumps are particularly suited for use in automotive and other rugged applications, in which fluid pumps may experience recurring freezing events.

Abstract:

An exemplary pump-head includes a pump housing having first and second housing portions forming a pump-cavity and a magnet-cavity. The pump-cavity contains a movable pumping element, and the magnet-cavity contains a driven magnet coupled to the movable pumping element. The magnet is driven by a moving external magnetic field, which correspondingly moves the pumping element in the pump-cavity in a pumping manner. The second housing portion has inlet and outlet ports and defines at least respective portions of the magnet-cavity and pump-cavity. The first housing portion is detachable from the second housing portion to allow the pumping element to be accessed and carried away with the first housing portion, without disturbing the second housing portion.

Abstract:

Pumps are disclosed that include a pump housing and at least one movable pumping element situated in the housing. The pumping element(s) are magnetically driven by magnetically coupling an external magnet driver (e.g., a stator) to a driven magnet located in the housing. A control circuit selectively operates the stator and a heat-producing element, so as to energize the heat-producing element especially in a potential freezing condition when the pump is not being otherwise operated. Thus, the fluid in the pump is prevented from freezing, and freeze-related pump damage is avoided. The heat-producing element can be the stator itself energized differently from when the stator is used for driving the pump.

Pump assemblies are disclosed that have a magnetically driven pump-head subassembly and a pump-driver subassembly coupled thereto, wherein the pump-driver subassembly includes a pump-driver enclosure. The pump-head subassembly comprises a rotatable magnet contained in a magnet cup extending into the pump-driver enclosure.
