  • Radio Transmitter

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6839548, Jan 4, 2005
  • Filed:
    Mar 1, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    08/609308
  • Inventors:
Daniel Paul Homiller - Cary NC, US
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    H04B 1700
  • US Classification:
    455 86, 455 76, 455113
  • Abstract:
A radio communication device modulates a received audio signal with an intermediate frequency (IF) signal before mixing with the radio frequency (RF) waveform for transmission by an antenna. A voltage controlled oscillator is utilized, which is tuned to N times the desired IF frequency. This voltage controlled oscillator is frequency modulated with the inputted audio signal to a deviation N times the desired IF source deviation. The voltage controlled oscillator is locked in a phase locked loop with a system reference frequency so that the output frequency is N times the desired IF frequency. The output of the voltage controlled oscillator is supplied to a “divide-by-N” frequency prescaler for generating a signal at precisely the right IF frequency and deviation.
  • Positioning System For Portable Electronic Devices

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7522101, Apr 21, 2009
  • Filed:
    Feb 28, 2006
  • Appl. No.:

  • Inventors:
Daniel P. Homiller - Cary NC, US
  • Assignee:
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB - Lund
  • International Classification:
    G01S 1/00
    G01C 21/00
  • US Classification:
    34235715, 34235706, 701213
  • Abstract:
A method for providing information to a GPS receiver includes selecting an apparent location and receiving positioning information corresponding to the positions of a plurality of satellites. The positioning information is combined and transmitted as a radio frequency signal that can be received by a GPS receiver. When the GPS receiver demodulates the radio frequency signal and calculates its position, the calculated position will be approximately at the apparent location, regardless of where the GPS receiver is physically located.

    G06K 5/00
  • US Classification:
    235380, 235379, 235383
  • Abstract:
A portable device authorizes a payment transaction from an account associated with the portable device. The portable device comprises a communication system, such as a near field communication (NFC) system, for communicating with a transaction system of a merchant or other receiving entity, a user interface, a memory storing account information for each of a plurality of accounts, and a transaction application. The transaction application applies at least one predetermined selection rule to the plurality of accounts to determine a selected subset of the plurality of accounts. A display of the user interface displays, under control of the transaction application, a plurality of transaction option indicators. Each transaction option indicator, which may be text or graphic, represents a one of the accounts within the selected subset of accounts. The transaction application prompts user selection of a selected one of the transaction option indicators.
  • Multimedia Distributing And/Or Playing Systems And Methods Using Separate Resolution-Enhancing Supplemental Data

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7830965, Nov 9, 2010
  • Filed:
    Jan 14, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    10/757247
  • Inventors:
Daniel P. Homiller - Cary NC, US
  • Assignee:
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB - Lund
  • International Classification:
    H04N 7/12
  • US Classification:
    37524026, 37524021
  • Abstract:
Multimedia data having a first resolution is transmitted and supplemental data is separately transmitted. When combined with the multimedia data having a first resolution, the supplemental data provides the multimedia content at a second resolution that is higher than the first resolution. The multimedia data having a first resolution is received and the supplemental data is separately received. The multimedia data having a first resolution and the supplemental data are combined, to provide the multimedia content at a second resolution that is higher than the first resolution. The multimedia data having a first resolution may be transmitted, received and played using streaming, while the supplemental data may be transmitted, received and played by downloading. Digital rights management schemes may be applied to the multimedia data having a first resolution and/or to the supplemental data.
  • Wireless Hands-Free System With Silent User Signaling

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7953454, May 31, 2011
  • Filed:
    Mar 21, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/249195
  • Inventors:
    Katsumi Ihara - London, GB
Daniel Paul Homiller - Cary NC, US
  • Assignee:
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB - Lund
  • International Classification:
    H04M 1/00
  • US Classification:
    4555691, 455572, 4554564, 455567, 455 412
  • Abstract:
Wireless hands-free system with silent user signaling. Silent alerting capability is provided for any hands-free device that relies on a short-range, wireless connection to interface to a terminal. The silent alerting action can be provided by any non-audible signaling mechanism, for example a vibrator or a light. A hands-free device establishes the short-range wireless connection with the communication terminal in question. When an alert message, such as for an incoming call, is received over the short-range wireless connection, the silent alerting action is produced in response to the alert message. The invention can find use in any wireless hands-free device, for example, a “Bluetooth” headset.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for aiding shoppers. A shopper enters a product search query into a hand-held device and, via Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, transfers the query to a terminal at a shopping establishment. The terminal forwards the search query to a search engine over a network and the search engine, after consulting a database, returns results meeting the criteria of the search query to the terminal for presentation on a display at the terminal. The shopper is then offered the option of transferring the results data, via NFC devices located in the hand-held device and the terminal, from the terminal to a memory in the hand-held device.
