  • Abstract:
    A transient electrical energy strike detector is disclosed. The detector may be integral with the circuitry of a fire alarm panel of a fire alarm system and may identify and record transient electrical energy strikes sustained by the electrical protection circuitry of the system. Particularly, voltage fluctuations in the fire alarm panel circuitry that are outside of a predefined operating voltage range may be identified by the pulse detector as representing transient electrical energy strikes. The pulse detector may increment a counter upon the occurrence of each identified transient energy strike, and may maintain a comprehensive record of such strikes in a memory unit, including a magnitude, duration, time, and date of each strike.

  • Abstract:
    A system and method for power supply ripple detection is disclosed. A voltage across one or more capacitors of the power supply is measured. An AC ripple voltage component of the capacitor voltage is then filtered and rectified into a DC signal. A level of ripple represented by the DC signal is then compared to threshold values to assess a health of the power supply. In one implementation, the power supplies provide power to control panels of one or more building management systems. The power supplies determine and report information concerning health of the power supplies to the control panels, the information including the DC signal itself and the result of the comparison of the DC signal to the threshold values. A cloud-based connected services system then receives and analyzes the information concerning health of the power supplies forwarded from control panels of multiple building management systems to determine trends.

  • Abstract:
    A system and method for testing the capacities of battery backups in alarm systems. The system may include an alarm panel, a notification device connected to the alarm panel, a battery backup connected to the alarm panel and configured to provide the alarm panel and the notification appliance with electrical power. The system may further include test circuitry that is configured to monitor a voltage and an output current of the battery backup when the battery backup is placed under a battery capacity test, and a system controller that is configured to determine, from the monitored voltage and output current of the battery backup, information relating to the capacity of the battery backup. Such information may be communicated to a workstation or an offsite monitoring facility where it may be compiled with information relating to the capacities of other battery backups in the alarm system to create a report.
