Shaped Cellulose Article Prepared From A Solution Containing Cellulose Dissolved In A Tertiary Amine N-Oxide Solvent And A Process For Making The Article
A solution containing cellulose dissolved in a tertiary amine N-oxide solvent containing a nonsolvent for cellulose such as water is shaped by extrusion or other shaping process to form a shaped cellulose fiber, rod, plate, tubing or film. The extruded shaped article is stretched in air while still a solution to impart improved physical properties thereto and the cellulose is precipitated from the shaped solution to set the properties without additional drawing. The solution may be prepared by dissolving cellulose in the tertiary amine N-oxide solvent in the barrel of an extrusion apparatus, extending the solution, orienting by stretching the resulting product in air while still a solution and then precipitating the cellulose from the shaped article before significant degradation of the cellulose. The cellulose and tertiary amine N-oxide may be ground to substantially the same particle size before charging the extruder barrel. The tertiary amine N-oxide is recovered and recycled to avoid environmental pollution problems.

Abstract:
A process is provided for making a solid precursor of a solution of cellulose in a tertiary amine oxide by suspending cellulose in a mixture containing a tertiary amine oxide and water under conditions where the amine oxide will not dissolve the cellulose until sufficient amine oxide has been absorbed to dissolve the cellulose when it is heated. An organic liquid which is not chemically reactive with the amine oxide or cellulose but is miscible with the tertiary amine oxide and is a non-solvent for the cellulose may be included in the amine oxide-water mixture to assist in the removal of excess water from the precursor or promote better distribution of the tertiary amine oxide through the cellulose.

Process For Making Amine Oxide Solution Of Cellulose
A process is provided for making a solution of cellulose in an amine oxide. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a solid precursor of a solution of cellulose in a tertiary amine oxide in the form of a chip or the like which has been prepared by suspending cellulose in a mixture containing a tertiary amine oxide and water is heated in the barrel of an extruder to dissolve the cellulose, and the resulting solution is extruded to provide an extrudate adapted to be shaped into a cellulosic product. In another aspect, a tertiary amine oxide solvent for cellulose can be added directly to the extruder where mixing and dissolution take place under the application of heat and pressure. It is further advantageous, in either case, where a non-solvent for the cellulose, compatible with the tertiary amine oxide and water, is employed.
A fiber-reinforced polymeric resin composite laminate which comprises at least one reinforcing layer of a saturated polyester fiber arranged between at least two reinforcing layers of fiberglass fiber. The fibers are bonded together by a synthetic resin, and the laminate contains from 4 to 16 reinforcing fiber layers with an equal number of reinforcing layers of the fiberglass fiber arranged on each side of the laminate.

Abstract:
A process is provided for making a solid precursor of a solution of cellulose in a tertiary amine oxide by suspending cellulose in a mixture containing a tertiary amine oxide and water under conditions where the amine oxide will dissolve the cellulose and cooling the resulting product to ambient temperature to provide a solid solution of cellulose in amine oxide. The product may be comminuted to form chips which are adapted to be fed to an extruder or other apparatus for shaping it into a cellulosic article. An organic liquid which is miscible with the tertiary amine oxide and is a non-solvent for the cellulose may be included with the amine oxide-water mixture to improve the up-take of the tertiary amine oxide by the cellulose.
This invention relates to a process for treating the surface of cellulosic shaped products such as fibers, films filaments, yarns and the like, formed from a spinning dope of a solution of cellulose in amine oxide, by applying to the surface of the product a nonsolvent liquid that will reduce the solvent action of the amine oxide for cellulose at the surface of the product.
