Abstract:

The present invention provides a high-energy density rechargeable lithium battery and method for making and using the same. In particular, the lithium batteries of the invention include a high potential cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte solution that comprises a fluorinated electrolyte, fluorinated solvent and a fluorinated additive. The lithium batteries of the invention have a cell that is at least 5 V when fully charged. Furthermore, the lithium battery of the invention has a high coulombic efficiency and can be recharged over 100 times while maintaining capacity retention of at least 90%.

Abstract:

Disclosed is a method of fabricating a battery or battery component having a solid state electrolyte. A scaffold is provided, the scaffold comprising: a dense central layer comprising a dense electrolyte material, the dense central layer having a first surface, and a second surface opposite the first surface; a first porous layer comprising a first porous electrolyte material, the first porous layer disposed on the first surface of the dense central layer, the porous electrolyte material having a first network of pores therein; wherein each of the dense electrolyte material and the first porous electrolyte material are independently selected from garnet materials. Carbon is infiltrated into the first porous layer. Sulfur is also infiltrated into the first porous layer. The battery component may be used in a variety of battery configurations.

Abstract:

Electrodes including a passivation layer formed prior to receiving an initial charge are provided. The electrodes comprise an electrode-composition including an active electrode species, in which the electrode-composition comprises a first surface. The electrodes also comprise a passivation layer positioned directly or indirectly onto at least a portion of the first surface. The passivation layer comprises a polymeric material and at least a first electrolyte. The electrodes can be included into an aqueous electrochemical cell. Methods of forming an electrode in the form of a thin layer or film are also provided. Methods of forming an aqueous electrochemical cell are also provided.

Abstract:

An electrochemical compressor utilizes a working fluid having a proton associable component, such as ammonia. Water may be reacted on a anode to form protons that are transported through an ion conducting membrane to the cathode side of the electrochemical compressor. The proton associable component of the working fluid will be pulled through the ion conducting membrane along with the proton. The ion conducting membrane may include perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer, polystyrene sufonic acid ionomer and/or carboxymethyl cellulose.
